i mean… blocking lists are universal, but the other features ublock offers are not - i’m making heavy use of ublock’s dynamic filtering panel and per-site switches. one important thing i use ublock for is to whitelist which sites get javascript permissions and to get rid of remote fonts to make pages more readable. those features need manifest v2.

if firefox drops manifest v2 and you’re relying purely on those inbuilt blocking lists then you might as well use the manifest v3 version of ublock without seeing a difference, right?

I said these browsers currently allow installing MV2 extensions; I didn’t predict about the future. Ok, ungoogled chromium will remove the flag in the future, and it can also affect helium. But it’s in the future; currently that flag is still there.

Brave is sued for its shady practices, ok! But we are talking about the installation of Manifest V2 extensions in the Chromium-based browsers, which the title explicitly says Firefox is the only browser that now allows you to install ublock origin, which is misleading. Brave still supports ublock origin, no matter if someone hates the browser or someone found it self-hosted.

So what do you guys find bad about me mentioning Brave? Also please mention a word: I’m saying these browsers are going to support MV2 extensions (ublock origin) forever.

…Okay. Technically, that’s true, going by strict semantics.

But the Helium and Ungoogled Chromium are going to lose MV2, soon. I feel like “still supports uBlock Origin” doesn’t sufficiently convey that to Lemmy commenters trying to read the situation. That’s all I meant, though I was perhaps imprecise with my words.

In other words, practically, if a users want to use UBO, they should know these browsers will not support that in the near future even if, strictly speaking, they support it right this second.

I believe this means Brave will lose support too, unless they intend to extensively modify Chromium to maintain compatibility themselves (which would be odd, as Brave doesn’t really need UBO since it has its own adblocking engine?)

BUT. These headlines are clickbait.

UBO has been disabled in Chrome for a long, long time. This is nothing new. Its old news.

Ublock Lite replaced it, and it’s not going away. It’s inferior and problematic and harder on devs, yes, but unfortunately Chrome users didn’t seem notice.

What’s being disabled is a crazy-difficult-to-enable flag that basically zero Chrome users actually used, and that only (a few) downstream Chromium forks use.

I agree it works good for me as well as is, but it sure would be nice to see one baked in and on by default. It’s legitimately a safety thing, I would never turn an old person loose on the web just raw dog lol guaranteed a disaster. Every computer I’ve ever setup for a friend or family member the first thing I do is get Firefox dl on windows and install ublock if it’s a pc, or get get a blocker going on safari if it’s Mac.

Those exact type of issues have existed in the past it’s why the FBI uses ad blocking and recommends that it’s used for security. There have been several browser vulnerabilities over the years that required absolutely no interaction from the user whatsoever it simply had to load the data.

The whole reason that manifest V3 was such a big deal for unlock origin is that it prevents it from intercepting and stopping the initial connection to The domain in the first place it can only remove it after it’s been received and even that was limited. On Firefox everything is still normal it’s able to completely stop the browser from ever reaching out in the first place

Like a true google hate inspired hipster I have been using Firefox for at least the past 9 years. Don’t let one of the shittiest companies control even more of the world because you are too fucking lazy to switch to a different browser. Yeah, the user experience of “just wipe cookies on browser exit” is a lot better than “have a million prompts all over zillions of sites”.

However, regarding “every single damn time”…some sites can have their “do you want cookies” popup just blocked by the Firefox I still don’t care about cookies addon. It’s not a solution for every site out there, but it’ll get a lot of them.

It’s also possible to use another extension, Behind the Overlay on some sites. This does require a click, so manual action, but it tries to identify “pop-over” content that covers up the browser window and remove it with that click. It’s really intended as a more-general solution to “pop-over” stuff, but cookie pop-ups often take this form and can be dismissed.

I was using vivaldi and they were kind enough(seriously) to inform me that they don’t support ublock anymore maybe a week ago.

Not sure about the reason but I think that it’s a technical thing the Google changed to deliberately make it easy to end ublock on a lot of browsers. Might not be the only reason(actual tech upgrades) but I believe it’s part of the reason since major conspiracies seem much more likely these days.

Anyway, I switched back to Librewolf even though it can’t play x.265 files (jellyfin). Anything that kills the use of ublock is dead to me even though they have their own shitty, bullshit blocking solution. It’s never going to be as good as ublock edit grammar and shit

It’s not a conspiracy. It’s been a very well published and discussed process.

There are exceptions but browsers are either reconfigurations of firefox, like librewolf, or reconfigurations of google chrome, like vivaldi.

google changed the manner in which plugins can interact with the web page you see. In recent months you could re-enable the old plugin interface by recompiling with a different configuration, but once google makes a change that breaks that old interface then you can’t just re-enable it.

Not enough, computers are a limited resource. They should be optional in my opinion, but money machines don’t care, so… Here’s a text wall I just copied from one of my other replies. It’s assuming and talking about a scenario closer societal collapse than 1984, but could be useful either way.

I’ve thought a lot about this before. Updoot because it’s a good question. Basically, if an anarchist society still has access to all of the books and such for long enough, someone somewhere eventually will figure it out. Blowing them glass bulbs is surprisingly uncomplicated once you have metallurgy (tutorial), you don’t even have to use mercury for the vacuum if you happen to have a regular factory built compressor nearby (will one from a fridge work? nobody knows, nobody tried), which you can then rebuild later. Build some circuits using wood + nail and metal wires as the PCBs, do random things to see how it reacts and learn from it. Now, electricity itself and metallurgy are fun but out of scope for this explanation. While that is happening, people can reuse existing TV boxes, routers and such. Someone could do a tiny C program or something to distribute data over the existing computers or something, then advertise it over (real life) bullet-in boards. Ironically, I suggest more distributed solutions (whenever possible/feasible of course) over something like this site, or usenet (R.I.P., now just full of piracy). Non-technical people can get their friends to help with using that. People who where previously sysadmins for ISPs and stuff should then probably allow just port scanning IPv4 to discover other people, and/or the v6 multicast (well, hopefully they can figure that out if they haven’t been “docker-washed” or whatever). Now, once someone figured something out, they share it with the comrades and “advertise” it using that solution. Or again, just the real life bullet-in boards. If there are enough good minds, they can then proceed to basically skip “regular” transistors and diodes (and maybe even real PCBs, although some already do that at home) and go straight for the micro fab. Now, it requires many fields of science. Like first, you need to take a few buckets of sand, containing rocks and shells and shit (literally), then purify it. Like, really really really fucking pure. This is where my personal level of expertise ends but I am sure that eventually some talented people in their own respective fields can meet up and think of something over an afternoon. From what I know (probably wrong), this basically involves melting it in a vacuum, unmelting, melting, unmelting and so on, then from the piece that formed you have to cut off the edges where all of the impure stuff ended up. Now, you need to make patterns on it. This guy figured it out but gave in and started a company. Basically, instead of the template you shine light through, you could substitute an office projector for something really shitty scale and really shitty reliability, but functional. The rest is mostly chemistry… idk I don’t speak chemistry. Now, you can go get someone who speaks transistor logic to implement some really shitty instruction set in hardware. I am sure it wouldn’t be too complicated to address map a teletype for some I/O. First few programs can be in ROM right inside the CPU (with redundant bytes of course given how shitty the manufacturing is) for testing, until RAM is figured out. > Oh look, my new chip draws boobs on paper! Then you, again, go share your findings with the society and find someone who still has a RISC-V design or something downloaded. Now, that might get good enough to run a multi user operating system (this will make sense soon). As much as we hate the C stdlib and all of it’s tech debt, I am not sure if anyone will be up for redoing all of that (yet). I have been shilling OpenBSD a lot lately, but for something like this I would imagine NetBSD would be more fitting. Plan 9’s stdlib is MUCH better (and there’s a functional WIP RISC-V port), but to properly use that you will need pointing and CRT tech so it’s kind of a circular loop there, and it’s also not as accessible due to being mostly GUI and due to having lots of single letter commands/shortcuts to remember across the included programs. Although whatever you can get your dirty hands on (I am being slightly pessimistic (or realistic, even) and assuming not having access to the internet at this stage, the one and only as we know for being controlled by the big IANA). Fork the OS you got. Most tools have been generally designed around some level of hierarchy, although for source control, git and compatibles (got…) remain best (thanks, Torvalds 2005). The reason is sharing patches over plain text, and more importantly applying them, becomes trivial (if you add a signature/checksum, even more so, as you now know it wasn’t corrupted or line converted or anything). Allow anonymous editing like for TCC to minimize said hierarchy (maybe invent a better solution later, like something distributed with proof of work for voting if a patch gets in or not… too bad all of this terminology has been taken by crypto bros). (EDIT: proof of work kind of sucks since capitalist rich kid can get 70 computers) Speaking of TCC, that’s a nice ass compiler, should probably use that to avoid hogging the tiny brain you’ve just built for others. “What others”, well… Here’s the part where a multi-user OS starts making sense. As soon as networking starts to network, put it right onto the usual networks with existing repurposed computers from before. Let it be like a pubnix, or “shell provider” if you like calling it that. Let people fuck around, find out (“help I deleted authorized_keys”), maybe even discover backdoors and other bugs. While that is happening, go improve, go make more, go offer some units IRL to especially interested people. Obviously, share the hardware designs, so someone also especially dared could do the office projector thing, while someone else is trying to figure out how to replace the said office projector with something more DIY. And basically, there you go. Now, this is technically possible under de-facto capitalism; although I am not sure if anywhere on this planet right now exists a community of especially dared, IRL connected and unoccupied enough in time people. Some training content for work (I think it was for an in-browser code security training). And I’ve run into one or two sites where they required me to try in Chrome for a support issue, just can’t remember what it was. And newbs vibe-producing corporate tool proofs of concept as Chrome plugins because it’s simpler and doesn’t depend on any gatekeepers to deployment. (Fortunately, other gatekeepers still got a chance to say “no” and forced it to become a real web application.)

At this point if you’re not already using a DNS filter of some sort, I have no idea how you survive. I use opnsense with zenarmor for ad blocking and it works really well. Had this going for a long time so no need to try pihole yet. I also use uBlock on my browsers for YouTube and the like. And greyjay on my phone. And I use automation on my phone (if not my WiFi, engage wireguard). I don’t know how I’d stay sane without it all.

I love nebula. Well worth it. Less content, but all but two of my preferred creators are on it (not including Dropout, which is also worth it). For those two, I use Freetube every month or so to check in, but they’re just Tiny little science channels that do simple experiments, and I can find the experiments they cite on their university webpages once I have the names of their demos.

No idea why uBlock specifically is being blocked, but it’s not like you can’t have an ad-blocker anymore.

because google took away the API for network traffic filtering. all that current filtering addons can do is pass a very brief, rarely updated network filter list to the browser, and insert cosmetic tweaks to the pages you visit. they can’t look anymore at all details of any network request and decide what do to. except on Firefox, where it has not been taken away.

When I did a site that didn’t play nice with one of my various Mozilla Gecko/Fusion browser flavors, I try a different one.

When they all are failing, not just WaterFox, I either fire up DuckDuckGo Browser or Safari if on a Mac.

If that were to fail I probably would quit using that service.

My actual Google account isn’t allowed on most of my computers anymore, since I DeGoogled, and only have it operating in very sandboxed environments like one Vivaldi browser that lives inside of a VM.

Switched to edge after chrome notified that adblock and other manifest v2 extensions will be blocked. Edge did the same thing recently. Now switched to Firefox. Used to use Firefox way back in the day then left it due to Chrome but now Firefox feels like home. Surprisingly l, it’s faster in some cases compared to Chrome. Not a single regret after switching. For one thing UBO, if you take the time to (turn on and) learn the advanced user mode, will let you customize interactions site-by-site, and remember your choices for years.EG I regulary use the zapper and eyedropper to get rid of stuff other than ads. It’s also easy to turn on/off site-by-site.

ublock has a lite version on chrome browsers that still works. but normal ublock is much better. ubo lite and other blockers are hiding the ads, but their lists can’t be updated so quickly.

but also, ublock origin is not just an ad blocker. it is a wide range content blocker, also efficient at blocking trackers and limiting fingerprinting. the browser API limitations that make it not work on chrome also means that it can’t do all that anymore, and it is really just a cosmetic ad blocker

I can actually speak to this as I also have weird issues with FF that doesn’t happen on a Chromium based browser.

Forms are a huge pain in the ass on FF a nonzero amount of time. It seems form validation and error handling simply fail a lot and it makes it almost impossible to navigate, even with me trying to fix their broken code.

Another weird place I’ve had issues intermittently is marketplace grids. Think Home Depot search results. Entire grids won’t show up or have CSS beyond comprehension.

Lastly video codecs. I use asbPlayer a lot and FF just does not have the same capabilities.

I can’t speak on OPs problems but I’ve absolutely had my fair share.

You don’t really need anything else. Frankly, the guy you’re replying to is being a whiny bitch about this. FF + uBlock is plenty - all you have to do is spend 60 seconds configuring it.

Toggle FF’s AI killswitch to the “enabled” option, set your default search engine to whatever you prefer, and turn on uBlock’s “annoyances” list. That’s it.

I got one of the budget phones from Muerna, the Teracube 2s. You gotta go really light on the apps on this phone if you want to find e/OS alternatives, otherwise itll be either laggy, slow or just break and won’t work. Fennec has a lot of privacy features on its app, to the point where some things just won’t freaking load if your really concerned about internet traffic, ads, trackers etc. For me it just dosent work on this phone unless I use it on my other phone ive been experimenting with, Galaxy A16 5g.

Unfortunately my work machine has an ARM Snapdragon Elite (it’s way better than it has any business being) and the ARM version of Firefox does not yet seem to play well with Yubikey certificates. I tried every which way of ARM and x86-64 Yubikey certificate drivers but none resolved my issues. I believe FIDO2 works, but some of our applications still require certificate authentication.
