I've started looking into whether it's possible to become a monk. I have no interest in any type of religion. I just want to be left alone in a quiet space for a long time.

@fesshole Don't monks have loads of practical duties on top of lone personal contemplation?
Maybe Stylite would be a more suitable occupation. It's probably due for a comeback.

@SocialCommentaryBot @fesshole there's always hermitry, that doesn't require religion & the day is yours

@fesshole It's not unheard of. This guy did that exact thing when he was 40.

@fesshole I mean technically you could get that working for city sewerage maintenance. But that might not be what you're looking for 😂

@joannejacobs @fesshole Isn't lighthouse keeper the traditional job for being left alone?

@joannejacobs @mansr @fesshole @patterfloof to be fair, we've had automated lighthouses since before some places had sewage systems...

@chloeraccoon @joannejacobs @mansr @fesshole @patterfloof To be "fair"...
It's a much simpler task and so needs way less engineering to automate.
It's a much smaller system that can be largely replaced instead of hacked on to add shit that wasn't anticipated.
There are clearly very practical reasons why lighthouses are largely maintenance free and sewer systems are not. This isn't something some cabal of assholes decided just to see poor people wallow in shit or whatever.
