anyway, DHH is not the only one who can book calls with OEMs.
but, as a community, we can only book those calls once. so we need to have a fucking plan.

to be clear, i do not think omarchy or omacom is good, but i can understand what DHH is *pitching* to Dell, for example.
it's a bullshit meme distro that he is pitching, but I guarantee you that he isn't selling it that way.
no. DHH is telling Dell that, with their investment, they can eventually ship laptops for developers with Omarchy instead of Windows and save money on Windows licensing.
and if you're not seeing that, you aren't looking at all of this from a product perspective

Hey, FOSS folks who haven't really taken a side when it comes to DHH and Omacom!
Do you think it's good for the future of FOSS for the founder of the most funded FOSS foundation ever to consider source-available licenses "open source"?
Check out the wording on this page of example Rails applications from the Rails Foundation. https://rubyonrails.org/docs/reference-apps
Now look at the Fizzy project from DHH's company at the bottom and its license https://github.com/basecamp/fizzy
Now look at this comment: https://github.com/basecamp/fizzy/pull/2039#issuecomment-3635737114
"DHH: I don't acknowledge the supremacy of OSI's narrow definition of Open Source being the definitive word on "open source""
Hey, team FOSS who are being quiet: is it good for FOSS to have a vindictive, fascist social media star who has illustrated that he doesn't respect the OSD to have a Foundation worth $18 million to do his bidding?
Because he's coming for you whether you like it or not. He will destroy every last shred of value that FOSS has given us. He has more money than you, he has more connections.
If you don't stop him now, this will be the end of FOSS.

in the most extreme interpretation, the desktop *itself* is a flatpak app
but i am not actually sure if that is possible atm
Replying to @ariadne@social.treehouse.systems
given this, such a distribution should be focused on three major things
1. a cohesive design aesthetic
2. providing just enough substrate to boot flatpak apps
3. integrating servo into the desktop environment for "web apps"

omarchy is basically the grifter aliexpress version of the thesis

this thread is not an invite to tell me about your favorite linux distro and why you think it defeats my thesis.
it doesn't.
and certainly omarchy doesn't meet the thesis.

@noel @whitequark or to put it in linux terms, you're thinking distros, i'm thinking SteamOS.

managing software needs to be obvious. package managers ain't it.
on mac, you install apps from either the app store or by dragging them to the applications folder.
Replying to @ariadne@social.treehouse.systems
somebody has already suggested that we should build this on Nix or whatever.
and like, you're just not getting the point.
the package management? flatpak.

in essence omarchy is a mechanism to take linux and turn it into a product, in the same way that macOS takes darwin and turns it into a product.
traditional linux distributions, by comparison, aren't defined products, they are work output from technical communities, and the design of them is approached from that philosophy.
Replying to @ariadne@social.treehouse.systems
a lot of people do not understand what omarchy actually *is* and why it is making progress where traditional distributions have failed.
they focus on the fact that omarchy *is* a vanity distro, that it is basically a collection of configuration files and some shell scripts gluing them together.
and omarchy is that.
but omarchy is also marketing and devrel, and a consolidation of the linux experience into a product format.
in fact, that is most of what omarchy actually *is*.
building a technical community that understands & executes on these things would be the goal of what i propose building
maybe i should build something like omarchy that isn't, you know, omarchy
hi @unredacted please be aware that we are considering defederating your instance because you have a troll (epicgaming@unredacted.social) on it for several days now.

anyway, the reason why i am not moved by the moral argument around copyright and GenAI is very simple: generally, the GenAI companies have infinity times more money than the artists they are ripping off.
which means making a copyright claim against a GenAI company is both expensive and unlikely to succeed unless you can afford the same lawyers they have
