“Average” human #genome described for first time, with implications for disease risk
A new study has characterised the “average” human genome, providing key information on normal human genetic variation and #geneticDisease risk.
^^^ I would conclude that there is no such thing as normal. Also, the fact that everybody has several potentially dangerous gene variants has been known since the last century. It's why we ban incest

@thattommyhall@functional.cafe @mcc@mastodon.social Monkey is a generic term referring to the lesser apes and the great apes, which the scientific classification is Simiiformes.
This is a great short blog read about it.
But if anyone prefer an amusing video about the topic Clint's Reptiles video is a must.

@gamingonlinux@mastodon.social I love SciFi, love the Cyberpunk themes and visuals but the game Cyberpunk 2077 has never hooked me. I don't know if it's the controls or the beginning is not interesting enough.
This PHP exploit has brought out again the PPP of Mastodon.
Timeline sorting "New" "Hot" "Active"
"New" is a timeline sorted by the latest.
"Hot" is calculated based on score (upvotes/reactions minus downvotes) and posting time. In timelines, the formula adds number of reposts in the mix.
"Active" is the most recently replied to (including subreplies). "Active" in timelines provides a fedi-microblogging experience similar to traditional forums - only root posts, bumped when replied to, with a "Last reply by..." at the bottom.
On a Forum post you can also sort comments by "New", "Old", or "Top".
*The screenshots are from the platform Catodon but this feature is also present on other Fediverse platforms.

"I don't understand this whole idiotic concept of "don't use AI for X".
Here's a new rule just for you: don't use compilers for any of your kernel submissions.
Because if you can't show that you really understand what the machine is actually doing by writing your code in assembler, then I don't want to see your code contribution. You clearly aren't competent if you can't write it that way.
And btw, you had better not use an editor to write that commit message either.
Because I need you to show me that you can actually write a good commit message without using tools that make it easy to backspace and hide the mistakes you made while typing.
Ok?
Because otherwise those tool-assisted commits of yours clearly aren't showing that you know what you are doing.
Do you not see how UTTERLY STUPID those kinds of rules would be?
So no. We're not going to make stupid rules that say "you can't use tools for X".
The kind of expectations I have is that people do their best and I expect people to understand what they are doing.
But that understanding has very little to do with what tools they use.
And quite honestly, in my experience, the people I respect and call intelligent are not the ones that shy away from using new and interesting tools."

Tonight's Low Quality Ad is for this Skeleton and Rose Blanket. Have you ever noticed that skeletons are always depicted as being fantastic dancers? This is because your spleen actively destroys your sense of rhythm. Those lucky boneheads are spleenless.

@panos@catodon.rocks I'm surprised that Firefish still have active users.
I'm also surprised by the stats of GoToSocial with 23 active users inspite of having 312 servers. Must be inaccurate.

I just published a blog post that explains the latest #WSocial controversy:
W Social is publishing as a permanent record on the open web the full names, nationalities and approximate birthdays of their verified users... who may be unaware all this information is available for anyone to see, outside of the social network.

These glowing beams shooting into the night sky aren't the northern lights — they're light pillars. Tiny flat ice crystals floating in freezing air act like mirrors, bouncing ground lights upward into perfect vertical columns.
They only appear on brutally cold, calm nights — and vanish the moment the wind picks up.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange sometimes there's come a time when a post just shouldn't be. I've never understood the super restrictive moderation features on public posts.

Don't want it reshared, don't share it.

At least not publicly.
