“Average” human #genome described for first time, with implications for disease risk
A new study has characterised the “average” human genome, providing key information on normal human genetic variation and #geneticDisease risk.

^^^ I would conclude that there is no such thing as normal. Also, the fact that everybody has several potentially dangerous gene variants has been known since the last century. It's why we ban incest

Timeline sorting "New" "Hot" "Active"

"New" is a timeline sorted by the latest.

"
Hot" is calculated based on score (upvotes/reactions minus downvotes) and posting time. In timelines, the formula adds number of reposts in the mix.

"
Active" is the most recently replied to (including subreplies). "Active" in timelines provides a fedi-microblogging experience similar to traditional forums - only root posts, bumped when replied to, with a "Last reply by..." at the bottom.

On a
Forum post you can also sort comments by "New", "Old", or "Top".

*The screenshots are from the platform Catodon but this feature is also present on other Fediverse platforms.

The top row contains a house icon next to the word "Home", followed by several white icons including a building, a planet with rings, a hashtag, a stylized cat head, an RSS signal, a camera, a speech bubble, and a tilde. tilde. A second row below contains the text labels "New", "Hot", and "Active". The text "New" is underlined with a bright blue horizontal line. "I don't understand this whole idiotic concept of "don't use AI for X".

Here's a new rule just for you: don't use compilers for any of your kernel submissions.

Because if you can't show that you really understand what the machine is actually doing by writing your code in assembler, then I don't want to see your code contribution. You clearly aren't competent if you can't write it that way.

And btw, you had better not use an editor to write that commit message either.

Because I need you to show me that you can actually write a good commit message without using tools that make it easy to backspace and hide the mistakes you made while typing.

Ok?

Because otherwise those tool-assisted commits of yours clearly aren't showing that you know what you are doing.

Do you not see how UTTERLY STUPID those kinds of rules would be?

So no. We're not going to make stupid rules that say "you can't use tools for X".

The kind of expectations I have is that people do their best and I expect people to understand what they are doing.

But that understanding has very little to do with what tools they use.

And quite honestly, in my experience, the people I respect and call intelligent are not the ones that shy away from using new and interesting tools."

Tonight's Low Quality Ad is for this Skeleton and Rose Blanket. Have you ever noticed that skeletons are always depicted as being fantastic dancers? This is because your spleen actively destroys your sense of rhythm. Those lucky boneheads are spleenless.

I just published a blog post that explains the latest #WSocial controversy:

W Social is publishing as a permanent record on the open web the full names, nationalities and approximate birthdays of their verified users... who may be unaware all this information is available for anyone to see, outside of the social network.

EU: “Allow alternate app stores, and do it fairly”
Apple: “Ahhh hell no! This is so unfair you guys are bullies! Malware! Privacy! We have standards! Unlike you we care about our users!”

These glowing beams shooting into the night sky aren't the northern lights — they're light pillars. Tiny flat ice crystals floating in freezing air act like mirrors, bouncing ground lights upward into perfect vertical columns.

They only appear on brutally cold, calm nights — and vanish the moment the wind picks up.

30,000+ PEOPLE targeted by the recording industry over file-sharing. Children were sued over songs. Adults faced million-dollar verdicts.

When tech companies ingest culture at industrial scale, suddenly copyright isn't important.

@david_chisnall@infosec.exchange sometimes there's come a time when a post just shouldn't be. I've never understood the super restrictive moderation features on public posts.
Its the

Don't want it reshared, don't share it.
Not thick-skinned, don't share it.
Fear backlash or abuse, don't share it.
Sensitive information, don't share it.
At least not publicly.
Can't have the cake and eat it too.

If you are on Catodon, Sharkey or Misskey, checkout the themes I created. Long story short Nyan Cat [search]is part of the inspiration. I got the night themes right on the first attempt IMO, but many of the day themes were trying to get it right.

Someone actually told me that my commercial writing is a bit like AI.
Meri jaan. I have been ghostwriting for over a decade. Your AI writes like me. It was trained on open blogs and takes the work of writers without their consent. It copied the tone and guidelines of free blogs. It has no opinion of its own. It's not thinking. You don't read enough to differentiate between AI writing and actual person writing, and that's a *you* problem, baby.
