Someone over on !perth asked a good question and it made me realise…it’s PiMaps (duh).

Which means you could probably host this on a Pi Zero 2 W with an SD card, then just connect your phone to its Wi-Fi hotspot.

Plug it into your car lighter via a converter, or even easier, run it from a USB battery bank.

So, for about $100 USD, if that, you could have a little “car server” that feeds PiMaps to your phone using basic off-the-shelf gear that you literally Lego together.

I called it Pimaps because I host it on a Pi. Radical, I know.

What exactly is your malfunction? You’re chasing me through three communities calling a freely shared, hand-coded project - one folks here begged me to share - slop. Put up or shut up. Audit the codebase if you have the chops. Or do you just like to talk shit and hope no one calls you out?

It combines offline mapping, search, wiki backed POI and routing into a service I control and can use across my own network.

It “solves” the problem of me wanting to do exactly that, using a Raspberry pi, and does so in under half a gig of ram.

It’s not a product I made for anyone else; I’m sharing it because people asked me to share it (thus the all at once remote push to github btw; I had no intention of sharing this until Lemmy asked).

That - and the fact that you may be used to radically more modern clients than my family seems willing to nurse.

I’ve got a dude with an OLPC. And another with an HTC One M8. A third with an Android 8 flip phone.

“Hey- you know computers. Make us a Google Maps.”

“Just…buy a modern phone.”

“No.”

“…”

Anyway, it was fun and I wanted to do it. So I did. I only ever write code under four circumstances

  • you’re my kid and you ask me to do something impossible
  • you pay me
  • it’s fun
  • sheer spite

That list may or may not be ordinal.

I think my main issue for this one is the requirement for internet. I cannot seem to be able to start it up because bootstrap is trying to download files. I’ve already downloaded the respective Zim file into the data folder. I by default block internet access to all docket images, and leave those I don’t want external access for that way.

If you can update an offline installer, and maybe docker images for the entire project instead of requiring cloning it down, I think this project would be awesome

Yep, I think I can see the issue. Let me think thru it properly when I’m back home. The way it works right now is that Docker Compose pulls the Python/nginx/BRouter images (and Kiwix if you’re using that), then bootstrap grabs the CORE WA assets as a once-off download.

The problem is that on a fresh install bootstrap doesn’t recognise pre-seeded CORE assets if you grab them manually. The ZIM is the exception (that one can be be validated and reused locally). So at the moment it assumes a once-off net connection to grab the PMTiles, search DB and routing data, and then you can basically lobotomize it from the internet afterwards. That was because I didn’t want to package the whole thing as one giant glob with a half GB d/l, as that might choke a SBC (it made my Rpi4 do exactly that).
