A great deal of work is being done by folks like @goto and @thisismissem to support a decentralized login experience in the browser that's on par with the closed-system status quo.

The fediverse can be a part of this by adopting the OAuth+FedCM (and eventually DIDs) pattern of open social web identities.

Mastodon is already on its way there with CIMD-support pending in Doorkeeper and the ActivityPub API Task Force has expressed interest in FedCM's IdP Registration API.

@silverpill added support for did:plc in APx (NomadPub), which paves the way for hybrid AP/AT instances.

I'd love to move my Mastodon account over to a fediverse instance that supports my open-social erlend.sh identity.

I made my plea for such a setup in the #fediverse three years ago, but since then most of the innovation in this space has happened in and around the AT protocol, which consequently pulled my attention towards that space.

However what's emerging here isn't specific to any one protocol, and #ActivityPub is neatly aligned IdP-agnostic web logins.

SocialHubAutonomous identity for the pluriverse based on OAuth/OIDCBoth the primordial fediverse of ActivityPub as well as the federated Matrix have been mulling over various private-key approaches to the ideal of decentralized or nomadic identity, but I think we’ve been trying to solve too many deep-rooted problems in one go. This has kept us in a holding pattern for many years: Nomadic identity for the fediverse? Decentralised user accounts · Issue #246 · matrix-org/matrix-spec · GitHub Meanwhile there’s a major convergence of OAuth/OIDC support across apu...
