the tech industry fervor over Omarchy is so fucking confusing to me that i'm honestly starting to wonder if it's just money laundering. over TWELVE MILLION DOLLARS for a fascist's dotfiles and bash scripts is patently insane

@davidcelis how in the heck? basically nobody gives alpine money and it is the backbone of the modern internet, but some vanity distro gets $12m?
do you have any idea what foundational distros like alpine could do with $12m? it would be game changing.
Replying to @ariadne@social.treehouse.systems
@ariadne
It's because fascists give money to fascists. Also I did not know that alpine is the backbone of the modern internet, but it completely makes sense. I've had only good experiences with it

Replying to @ariadne@social.treehouse.systems
@ariadne @davidcelis Forget alpine. Just give it to Arch. You know the distro on top of Omarchy is based.
Replying to @ariadne@social.treehouse.systems
@ariadne@social.treehouse.systems @davidcelis@xoxo.zone $12 million is a lot of money, that is so much money that even if it was split up evenly between 100 different OSS projects it still would've been a world changing amount of money for each of them, when most non-corpo FOSS projects operate on budgets measured in toothpicks and pennies even just a couple digits in a single donation is already huge, a full $12m is unimaginable
but no throw it all down the toilet into some fascist vanity distro where it'll make a difference to approximately nobody of value ig, great job society

@davidcelis @glyph I think it’s ultimately about alignment of the wider liberal FLOSS world to fascist tech bros’ ideology.
… to projects where it’s actually going to benefit people.“
Sure, if you ignore the consequences of making your project funding, maybe your salaries and financing of new professional project contributors directly dependent on the whims of the #Omacon Foundation and #DHH, that might sound like a splendid idea.
Their long-term strategy might actually be to align the liberal FLOSS ecosystem to their fascist motifs. To suffocate opposition.
Replying to @davidcelis@xoxo.zone
@davidcelis@xoxo.zone it's not exactly money laundering, it's how people can take giant amounts of donations that are classified differently under tax laws. There's a lot of things that would otherwise be fairly innocent that exist mostly just to take gift money that ends up funneling into another project, usually politics. The obvious example of this is Super PACs.
It's just now the US is set up with their tax system. This is how you get rich without paying (as many) taxes and without a foreign bank account.
@ada yeah “tax evasion” was more akin to what i meant but i was too mad to get the right words out
Replying to @davidcelis@xoxo.zone
@davidcelis@xoxo.zone gets better when you consider both sides get tax relief from this. it's a well known loophole that requires connections and starting capital but it boggles the mind why it hasn't been closed yet. actually it doesn't but you get it.

a distro
Replying to @davidcelis@xoxo.zone
@davidcelis yes it’s a way for rich people to pass around money and utilize tax law to their gain and to circularly inflate others in the group. Just like membership in the Rails foundation is essentially a way to buddy up with DHH and Tobi
Replying to @davidcelis@xoxo.zone
No, a money laundering scheme would look more sensible at first glance.
Replying to @davidcelis@xoxo.zone
@davidcelis I always liked it when distros made things easier for newbies but this one is just plain stupid defaults and for once, I'll be an annoying elitist "if you claim to be an advanced user or want to became one but you pick this trash of a wannabe distro, instead of I don't know reading the archwiki and installing arch that way and configuring whatever WM by again reading docs, then you are not a true advanced user but just a noob wanting to be called an expert".
- vanilla arch user
Replying to @pikachu_sensei@mastodon.social
@pikachu_sensei @davidcelis I mean easier Arch distros already exist. Manjaro immediately springs to mind. EndeavourOS doesn't look to be anti anything they're for per se even. So, regardless, they're definitely not providing anything new or different.
Honestly, I'm leaning towards the OP being right that there are some suspicious scammy things going on here. Definitely some money laundering, but who knows... At the very least they want to put something dangerous out there...
Replying to @nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social
@nazokiyoubinbou @davidcelis I was saying that because youtubers are presenting this spin ( it definitely isn't a distro) like a user friendly option for newbies that don't want to configure a WM. It isn't and honestly catchy os is a much better option for people who want a pre-configured setup, although I wouldn't recommend new linux users anything arch based because when things go wrong, it's not a pleasant experience. I keep seeing more videos on it and honestly it feels like paid promotion.
Replying to @nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social
@nazokiyoubinbou @davidcelis The person behind the project was more than enough for me to reject this but now I am finding technical reasons too and it's just horrible. And four combo shortcuts in keyboard, seriously that alone triggers me. I personally prefer no more than three and that too feels too much.
Replying to @davidcelis@xoxo.zone
@davidcelis It's (political) advertising. Some sort of software-as-lifestyle concept and probably an attempt to vaguely get people to "like" some guys (or at least buy into the "idc politics i just like the thing they made" thing) and start somewhat agreeing with them maybe occasionally perhaps.
Replying to @davidcelis@xoxo.zone
@davidcelis those donors are billionaires, they don't need to launder a bunch of millions. This is just part of the culture war.
