Im not sure that deemphasizing following hashtags while the new UI for them isn't ready is a good idea. Being able to follow hashtags at all is a Fediverse power feature that's the first thing we try to teach newbies around here. Removing it from the menu when you haven't followed any yet makes the feature harder to discover.

@luana how is the asterism corporate? it has been a grass roots effort to get this symbol to where it is recognized as it is today. it came from issues with the symbol not working without the rainbow color and there not being any good solution to solving this. there are many cases (like this one) where a multicolored symbol simply does not work

@luana @Mastodon I think you're confusing it with the icon Meta made up for the fediverse. The asterism is a fediverse invention.

@Gargron @Mastodon isn't this heavily inspired on Metas one? It's basically the same anyway, except for asterisks instead of circle people

@luana @Gargron @Mastodon i'm pretty sure it's the other way around, the asterism was original in Fedi first and was then adopted by Meta. doesn't mean insisting on something from Unicode isn't very corporatey anyway, that's literally what Twitter did when it moved to X.

@Yuvalne @luana y'all got it quite a bit upside-down. The asterism was an idea by a group of people here (started by me and two friends) specifically to counteract Meta using a proprietary icon for Threads to represent the fedi. This thing has nothing directly to do with Unicode & was not at all related to X using the math symbol (that also happens to be in Unicode)

The whole reason that its nice that ⁂ is in Unicode is that we don't need to do any additional work to display it everywhere

This looks really nice, if a little sterile for now. Easy colour scheme configuration sounds like the perfect fix c:

I like the floating modal, it would give my character limit-straining ass a lot more breathing room. Especially if you could resize it via dragging.

I might have just missed this in the post, but would it still be possible to reply to someone and make the reply a direct message? I think it's a really neat Fediverse feature that you can initiate a private conversation that already has a prior thread natively attached to it. It's useful for taking previously public conversations private, or for talking to artists about announced commissions.

Of course, doing this while keeping the semantic separation between private and public messages up sounds like a pretty serious design challenge, so I can understand if that had to be sacrificed.
