TL;DR, this doesn’t belong in “Technology”. Isnt’ there a “whiny melodrama” community?

ya know, I didn’t know where to put it. It’s not news, it’s not a shitpost… it’s tech drama? so that’s why I posted it here? If you can think of a better place, let me know. But, I thought, as popular as this whole debacle was on lemmy, people at least deserved to see this shithead ragequit.
Many of us are just glad he’s gone and sad that everyone that’s still here keeps posting about it.
There’s a fedidrama community I think and if so, that would be the best fit I think. This belongs in Technology about as well as me complaining about the phone case not being the color I wanted.

There’s a Fediverse community this would be more appropriate for.

As someone who generally doesn’t care about internet drama but is on the list, I appreciate you posting it here.
Hopefully he took his ball and went home for good this time.

Yet another lesson NOT learned.
Interesting, as someone who was regex’d out of existence by Tesseract, can’t say I really care. But what do you expect building a shadow ban list in a place that is supposed to be free? That can’t come off as any other way than malicious. For once someone is more sanctimonious than I.

AdmiralPatrick went about this the complete wrong way, and was salty as heck. There’s no excusing the blocklist implementation.
But… I don’t disagree with their sentiment.
That comment directed at db0 is abrasive and uncalled for. Yet. Just the other day, I saw a commenter highlight this:
“Users who advocate violence are not moderated so long as the admins agree with the target.” Are they wrong though?
And among the comment maelstrom, db0’s reply was:
We’re not pacifists, no.
And of course my own take that I would rather not kill people was shot down vehemently. To think I almost joined db0 when I first found the Fediverse…
…What the fuck?
I don’t want to be close to a community like that.
One that just endorses calls for explicit violence and dances on people’s graves as long as the admin agrees with the target. One that boosts straight up misinformation as long as it has the “right” message. Lemmy.world seemed like it was on a trajectory to moderate that, but like the Tesseract dev observed, it sure doesn’t feel like that anymore.
Why would I wanna post about niche topics in a place like that?
In a place like this?
…Yeah, I don’t feel welcome here anymore, either. I haven’t for a while. If the trend holds, commenters are gonna call me out as being insufficiently anti-fascist, again.
I’m sick of that.
Maybe I’ll try blocking more spaces, and stick to niche discourse.
But if Lemmy’s current trajectory holds, and the bar for calling for violence is that low and spammed everywhere, I’m most certainly deleting my account, and leaving, too.
And of course my own take that I would rather not kill people was shot down vehemently.
> says you would rather not kill people
> makes account on liberal capitalist instance
> capitalism kills billions
> States do violence all the time
> liberal world order locked in climate disaster for all life
Make it make sense

If the trend holds, commenters are gonna call me out as being insufficiently anti-fascist, again.
Look, pacifism is a defensible position. It’s not my position, but I empathize deeply with pacifists and I truly abhor violence.
So it would be very bizarre for an actual pacifist to view lemmy.world, whose admins are liberals (and therefore not pacifists, since at a minimum, liberalism advocates for the violence of the State and capitalism), as better than lemmy.dbzer0.com, whose admins are anarchists, who are often not pacifists, but whose social program is explicitly oriented towards minimizing violence. IMO non-pacifist anarchists and pacifists agree on the necessity of minimizing violence as an objective. The difference between a pacifist and a non-pacifist anarchist is whether we believe that the system achieving the minimal possible violence has either zero or nonzero violence.

LW is a capitalist instance? Are you fuckin’ high?
Yeah their admins are liberals, and liberals are capitalist.

Not what liberal means at all. 🤦♂️
Sounds pretty capitalist to me 🤦♂️

I guess if you only read the first paragraph and not the second. Liberals can be capitalist; it doesn’t define liberalism.
Okay here we go:
Liberalism became a distinct movement in the Age of Enlightenment, gaining popularity among Western philosophers and economists. Liberalism sought to replace the norms of hereditary privilege, state religion, absolute monarchy, the divine right of kings, and traditional conservatism with *representative democracy*, rule of law, and equality under the law. Liberals also ended mercantilist policies, royal monopolies, and other trade barriers, instead promoting free trade and *marketization*. The philosopher
John goddamn fucking Locke
is often credited with founding liberalism as a distinct tradition based on the social contract, arguing that each man has a natural right to life, liberty and property, and governments must not violate these rights. While the British liberal tradition emphasized expanding democracy, French liberalism emphasized rejecting authoritarianism.
(Natural right is highlighted because it’s a spook of the mind and it’s inextricably interlinked with the existence of a divine being. I.e., it breaks once belief in a higher power breaks. Freedom is taken, not bestowed by God, nature, governments, etc. E.g., regardless of whether or not philosophers decided you have a natural right to clean water, you deserve clean water, rights be damned, and you ought to take the steps necessary to get it.)
Yeah sounds pretty capitalist to me. Like I deliberately did not talk about John Locke because I thought that would be cheating 😆
Liberals can be capitalist; it doesn’t define liberalism.
No lol. If you’re not a capitalist then you’re literally not a liberal either, you’re something else.

Gestures.
This is exactly what I’m talking about.
Did I mention liberalism, capitalism, anarchism or anything? I don’t think so. But now we’re talking “John goddamn fucking Locke” and this thread is barreling towards satisfying Godwin’s Law.
Replying to @PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@anarchist.nexus
Have you read John Locke? Locke’s writings on the social contract, the value of labor, and a person’s natural rights to life, liberty, and property point toward him being anti-capitalist.
After this comment, I don’t think you even know what capitalism actually is.

I’ve been blocking a lot of spaces, but the tankies just spread out and brigade everything. It’s really annoying. I’m on a German instance so I’m pretty sure db0 defaderated because we actually police antisemitism, so I already get less of this.
But yea, Tankies being completely unhinged is all over the internet. If you want some examples look at what happened to Ethan Klein and Fleshsimulator (Re-upload because he gets mass reported).
This needs to get called out more.
YouTubeI can’t believe this happened.Replying to @MareOfNights@discuss.tchncs.de
But it’s not just the tankies, apparently. It’s db0 too? Extremists on .world. And yeah, the toxic “snark” subs that Ethan Kelin video points out seem about right.
It’s also that I’ve seen this story before, before I found the Fediverse. Reddit clones that don’t get shut down just wither away when distilled to such an extreme. Lemmy/Piefed would be no different, in spite of everything it has going for it.
Even if we can block most of the Fediverse somehow, what’s the point of staying on a sinking ship?

seems to me the real issue is he did not advertise his app as offering a carefully curated experience and here is everything that is blocked and such. if he had there would be no drama as the first comment would be how his app goes over this and explains it all to anyone looking to use it.
It’s weird how he thinks the fediverse needs saving and takes it upon himself to be its savior. Feels like a messiah-complex.
And even then, he still could’ve gone and carved up what he would define a safe space by his standards. All he needed to do was be upfront about it. He can’t accept that people are mad not because he created a blacklist for users and instances he deems unsavory, but because he tried to hide it behind an app that is advertised as a generic front end for lemmy and is supposed to be useable for everyone. If he disclosed what he was doing behind the scenes, then people who don’t agree with his methods would just stop using it, exactly what he was telling people that you have the choice to not use it, when he was trying to defend what he did.
I mean, look at .world. They have defederated from a ton of stuff because of their policies, and they’re still doing fine because users are well aware of their stance.
The irony of trying to turn the fediverse into something it was created as an opposition of.
I remember I was one of the first people who provided feedback when it was first announced. I never got to using it because I browse mostly on desktop at it was designed for mobile (at least the time, I dunno what it looks like now).
