@atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org @cochise@comuna.social.br thank you both for the kind and supportive words, means a lot! Chris, you know I'd always love to have you more active in the project and get your feedback, I know you have a lot to offer. I also know that how things turned out with Firefish was pretty disappointing. Catodon is my attempt to make it right this time, and I'm very happy with how it's evolving!

Today is the first day of the sex positive gathering I am attending in Berlin and I'm beyond excited! Sadly, this means I will have very little time (if any) for Catodon development. Please be a little patient, next week I am returning to Greece and will resume work for the next stable release (end of August or beginning of September). Some good stuff is on the way!

Trans-friendly PieFed features

Trans people have a lot to deal with and there’s many of them on the fediverse so I’ve taken special care to ensure their voices influence the development of PieFed and have built some features with them in mind.

@AntoineD@kwak.cab one of the reasons it took several hours was that I had issues with embedding the video - initially fetching was fixed, but the videos did not appear embedded. Posts that were fetched before the embed fix will probably miss the embedded video. Can you see if this happens to peertube posts that are fetched now for the first time?

The CW idea is interesting, I have also noticed the problem with long descriptions - but they are displayed like this in the detailed post view, in the timeline or in the poster's profile they are collapsed under a "Show more" button. But if you think that's nott good enough, perhaps open a new issue on codefloe for that? My brain is tired rn, I'm off to bed soon and I can't think about this clearly. Thanks!

Gaza is preparing to hold the largest funeral in its history.

Today, we bid farewell to 122 souls—122 bright lights from the Abu Sharia and Al-Husaina families, taken all at once.

This isn't just a number; these are whole generations wiped out, families erased, and dreams ended in a single moment. This is what daily life in Gaza looks like.

Please don't look away. Share their stories and let the world see the reality we are living through every single day.

@AntoineD@kwak.cab issues on codefloe would be the best so that I don't forget something! You can also join #catodon:matrix.org and #catodon-support:matrix.org if you use matrix, for more direct discussion with other users as well.

About pre-build images, I have tried doing that automatically when we were on Codeberg but it failed, presumably because the project is heavy. I want to start doing it locally and uploading them at some point soon, hopefully with 26.8.0.

@AntoineD@kwak.cab @catodon hello! First of all, better mention my account for questions - I don't always check notifications in the Catodon account (yeah, I should :psi_grimacing:). Now, to migrate from Iceshrimp.js, you first have to follow the migration instructions from Iceshrimp to Sharkey - which is a kinda long process, but worth it! Then migrating to Catodon is very easy - just point to Catodon's repo, git pull, pnpm install, pnpm build, pnpm migrate and start the service. You could probably follow the same guide and skip Sharkey, going straight to Catodon. But always keep a backup of your database before attempting a migration!

Looking forward to having you join the club, if you decide to do it =)

Sharkey DocumentationMigrating from IceshrimpThis guide was only tested on an Iceshrimp-JS instance, on version v2023.12.11. Iceshrimp.NET is not supported, and as far as known, the migration from Iceshrimp-JS to Iceshrimp.

What would you like to see in a "Media" timeline?

I am adding an Instagram-inspired Media timeline, based on Home (Following), and I'm wondering what would people want from something like that. For example, should it include only photos and videos, or audio files too? And anything else I might be missing (never used Instagram tbh). Thanks!

Found some time earlier than expected, so here are the basic differences of my fork:

- It makes each federated category/tag behave much more like a real Lemmy community (Group actor), including its moderators, featured posts, follower rules, and shared inbox.
- A Discourse topic can be sent as a Lemmy-compatible Page (with replies as Notes), rather than only the formats upstream offers.
- Votes federate: remote upvotes/downvotes become Discourse likes, and the federated score is shown on posts.
- Moderation federates in both directions: removals, bans, locks, moderator changes, reports, and featured/pinned posts can be communicated to compatible remote communities.
- Discourse users become proper, followable ActivityPub people. Mentions are also resolved for federation.
- It can follow a remote community—for example on Lemmy or NodeBB—and present it inside Discourse as a local “shadow category.” Local users can then read and participate from Discourse.
- It adds an instance-level actor and optional “authorized fetch,” which can require signed ActivityPub requests when other servers retrieve content.
- Administrators get extra tools: community/federation health view, remote-community management, per-community ban management, URL/content resolution, and bulk republishing/backfill.

Catodon repo moved to Codefloe

Following Codeberg's recent decisions about projects developed with the use of AI, we have moved to @codefloe@social.tchncs.de . The new Catodon repo url is https://codefloe.com/catodon/catodon - please update your git remote!

We are thankful to Codeberg for hosting us so far, but we will not apologize for utilizing one of the biggest technological breakthroughs in decades for the development of open source software, nor for spending countless hours in order to create a great fediverse platform with unique features, bridging the microblogging and the threadiverse sides of fedi. If you need to judge the project, you can judge it by the end result instead of the tools we use for development.

We prefer not to be judged for just doing what we love and making it available to everyone for free, though, so we're excited to join Codefloe!
