What is stopping someone from flying to mexico, buying an EV there, and driving it back and getting it registered?
Some states may have safety regs, but some mid-america states don't seem to give a shit about what you drive where.

You would have to pay the 100% tarriff on a Chinese EV because you’d be “importing” it. You likely wouldn’t be able to register it in any state without proving the import duty had been paid.
And assuming you flew under the radar and somehow registered it without paying, the Feds would get access to the registration records and the CBP would eventually come after you.

- buy car
- request bill of sale to state the car was $5.00
- bribe the salesman with gold
- drive back to the US
100% tariff on my bill of sale of $5.00 is $5.00.
