This one will hurt: I love 1Password as a product. But I'm the son of a concentration camp survivor. I will not give money to companies that align themselves with nationalism, and certainly not ethnic cleansing. Completely disappointing, @1password. flyingpenguin.com/dhh-nazism-f

I continue to be amazed that this community exists unspoiled by whatever spoiled all other social media platforms.
Everytime I have need to know something someone here takes the time to nudge me in the right direction.
No matter the topic or the ask.
Mastodonians are generous, kind, loving and down right smart.
I know a lot about somethings and nearly nothing about other things but because we have friends here the answers to those other things are just a toot away.
Summer and I watched the sky get beautiful for just a minute so we could have something to give back to our friends who give us so much.

I really feel like we had several prominent FOSS organizations fail us by not saying "hey hold on, don't use generative AI in FOSS projects, we're not sure what the legal, community, environmental implications of this are but there are serious problems and we have a history of taking a stand" and I worry that maybe we lost our moment to be principled, except in niche spaces, and the walls are closing in

And... I'm really sad about it. I think we're underestimating the amount of damage that's happening. :\

A 4-panel Joy of Tech comic showing Meta, Instagram, Threads, the Thumbs Up icon, and Facebook personified as party-going characters celebrating the child harm lawsuit settlement. Panel 1: The characters wear party hats and hold champagne, celebrating. Meta says “Woohoo! We settled the child harm case!” Instagram says “And all it cost us was the thing we have the most of… money!” The Thumbs Up adds “I love that it was just a slap on my wrist.” Panel 2: Meta: “We have to pay 17 billion, so that’ll only cost us about ten days of profit annually!” Instagram: “Even less! Our stock jumped almost 14 billion in value on news of the settlement!” Threads: “LOL! So the punishment made us richer!” Panel 3: A banner behind them reads “We won the child harm case.” Facebook: “But you know what’s even better than getting richer? They are forcing us to do age verification.” Threads: “Omg! Birthdates! Government IDs! Face scans!” Panel 4: Meta: “So to prove they’re a kid, we get to collect even more of their data!” Facebook: “This is fantastic! Who can we harm next?” — Open image attachment ⁨1⁩ of ⁨1⁩

@Edent RFC9421 only lists a handful of possible algorithms. IIRC if your key is ed25519 only one of them applies, similarly if the key is ecdsa. I think there are two possibilities for RSA keys, but we only support one for legacy reasons and do not plan to encourage future use of RSA so will likely never implement the other. So in practice looking at the key type should be sufficient to determine the algorithm used.

big news about the Wizard Zines store: print orders from Europe now ship from a European warehouse in Germany!!!

We've been having a lot of issues with duties & fees for European customers because of shipping from the US so I'm very excited for this.

get your zines here: wizardzines.com/

(and here's the shipping FAQ with all the details: store.wizardzines.com/pages/sh)

How to live in the age of AI - Gautami Reddy

A collection of drawings with suggestions of how to live in the age of AI.
- Read slowly.
- Make ugly things.
- Don't believe everything. (With a drawing of a man with a tie saying "the future is here, while a woman is holding a dog that's pooping while on a lead)
- Eat together.
- Get bored. (With a drawing of someone stargazing)
- Avoid instant replies. (With a drawing of someone playing with a fish in a fish bowl while their phone goes "ting ting ting ting!" on a nearby table
- Call your grandma/grandpa (A drawing of two people next to each other, have a phone conversation "Where are you?" "Right behind you"
- Fall in love (A drawing of two people dancing together)
- Cry every now & then (A drawing of someone lying on the floor, sobbing, while holding a flower and telling it "omg you're so pretty!"
- Memorise a poem (A drawing of someone holding a piece of paper, reading "I'm a phenomenally phenomenal woman, that's me!")
- Trust your gut (A drawing of someone who has freed three birds from a cage)
- Take your time (A drawing of someone working at a desk on a laptop. There is an angry person standing next to them wearing a shirt that says "boss". The boss says "Can you finish this in the next hour?" the person working says "Nope!" with a smile on their face.)

After some time off, I'm now ready to look for work again! I'm especially interested in positions related to:

✊️ Digital rights activist (with a specialty in privacy rights)

📣 Communications or Campaigns Manager

🔒️ Privacy expert or consultant

🙌 Managerial position

📰 Tech journalist (investigation, education, advocacy, review)

💻️ Technical writer (tutorials, documentation, research)

:mastodon: Fediverse and Mastodon advocate

:opensource: Open-source advocate

💚 Or any other fitting positions

I am especially interested in working with nonprofit organizations, cooperatives, open-source projects, privacy-oriented software companies, or any other organizations working for the public good.

Also, with a team that doesn't require to be recorded during meetings or presentations (and doesn't use AI notetakers).

🇨🇦 Remote from Canada

:no_AI_logo: All the work I produce is guaranteed to be AI-free

Let me know if you hear of any good opportunities!

Alright Fedi, I'm looking for a job out of AI hell. I know chances aren't great for anyone right now, but I'm taking mine anyway.

I'm a (senior?) #Python developer with 10 years of experience in both #DataScience and #SoftwareEngineering (with a preference for the latter). I can find my way around #Rust and don't shy away from #JavaScript. I've done a bit of #React lately and haven't found it terrible.

I thrive in team environments where I have time both to work on my own and in pairs or mobs ( mob.sh is a great tool I'd use again, but IntelliJ's Code With Me works too).

My greatest passion is automating the tasks around coding away - testing, building, deploying code with either the shortest set of commands or just fully automated from a pipeline on pull/merge requests.

I won't say no to places that require me to use AI, but I have a strong preference to be able to write my code myself.

Would love boosts for reach! Also thanks for reading 💖

Edit because I'm really dumb: looking in the greater #Mainz/ #Wiesbaden area in #Germany or fully remote. Remote is generally an important factor for me for personal reasons; if your company does things like "3 days a week office", I will only be able to do this in a very small radius.

David Roetzel boosted

I'm a highly experienced software engineer with over 20 years of experience and thousands of FLOSS projects to my name, as well as some household names on my CV.

I've done most things software over the years at all levels of the stack. If you have a software-shaped problem, I'm your guy!

Available immediately. Contract or perm. Located in the netherlands but happy to remote to anywhere #FediHire #GetFediHired

- You are not obligated to have a strong opinion about everything. Get fewer opinions about way fewer things, and then strive always to interrogate the basis of your strongest opinions. This is very difficult, so be grateful if you've found fewer strong opinions to interrogate.
- Priorities are like arms. If you think you have more than a couple, you're either lying or crazy.
- If you're struggling to understand someone's behavior or motivation, understand that it's almost always because of money, fear, or both.
- If you have cool stickers, use them. Put them on things. Be carelessly joyful about using your stickers. If you die with a collection of dozens of cool stickers that you never used, you did it wrong.
- Related: food is for eating, heirlooms are for using, champagne is for drinking, and fancy clothes are for wearing. You are not a fucking docent, and the Pope is not coming to your house.
- Whenever you meet someone new, ask them what they're most excited about right now. Everyone interesting is excited about something right now, and they'd probably love to tell you about it.
- Related. When you meet a child, ask them if they would share the coolest thing that's happened to them this week. You can also ask them about their favorite food. Kids love food and have many thoughts about it.
- Whenever you're considering escalating any relationship, ask yourself whether you'd be okay with getting ten times more of them. In other words, consider whether a lot more of "how they are" is a thing you really want to pursue. — Open image attachment ⁨1⁩ of ⁨1⁩
