I tried hosting the bridge and it was hard to set up and unreliable. Right now I have WhatsApp installed on Graphene OS in a work profile so it doesn’t get access to all my contacts, only the ones I had to specifically add in this profile. In theory you can restrict it even more using labels but managing this was a pain in the ass.

WhatApp will still know who are you talking to and you still have to run their app somewhere so in my opinion setting up the bridge just so I don’t have their app on my phone is simply not worth the hassle.

I guess if they optionally required some crypto payment instead of phone number it would made some people happy. Will be interesting to see where does this go.

Yes, degree inflation is nothing new. I remember my uncle telling me how difficult his high school graduation exams were and how easy they got later.

We already had private school giving diplomas to politicians without attending any classes (I know about such instances in Spain and Poland). With AI getting some type of a degree will be just a formality for most people. No idea if it’s an issue or not. If employers want to use degree as a proof for anything they will have to verify which ones mean something. If they don’t care then I guess no one will.

Xorg servers starting from version 1.7 have a feature called “multi-pointer”. Basically it allows to have multiple mouse cursors (each with its own keyboard focus) on the screen and control them with separate physical input devices

So the problem here is degree inflation. 20 years ago when I was getting my first master’s degree it was a 5 years of in person classes. In the meantime degrees became required for lots of positions. Teachers need to get additional degrees to get promotions, you need a degree to apply for a job in the public sector and so on. So what used to be a proof of your qualifications became just a certificate you need to get. Now I’m getting my second master’s degree and it’s a year of online classes, without any in person evaluation. We will either start distinguishing between bullshit degrees from online universities and real ones or all of them will lose any value.

How are you going to make money doing that?

I guess it could help limit the price gauging by the few companies that will have the best models but so would the ability to hire junior devs.

Of course but they would have to pay for accessing it and the company with more efficient model will offer it at lower prices and most likely win customers. Having open weights doesn’t change anything here.

Has it? Jira, Teams, Slack, Google Meet, Cisco WebX… There’s obviously Jitsi but I don’t see companies racing towards it. When it comes to SaaS most companies prefer to pay and be done with it. Few are choosing to host open source solutions. Windows and Mac are also way more popular than Linux in office settings. With LLMs hosting it will be even more complicated because companies will have to invest heavily in GPUs.

If the bubble bursts companies will lose funds to work on new models but someone will still be able to offer existing models as a service. Companies will chose the one with better price and functionality. Being free or not will have little to do with it.

I would argue that in many places closing coal mines was the policy and governments did pass laws to speed up the process. Not really the case with manufacturing plants.

Yes, both parties. But they didn’t pass any laws to ban manufacturing in US. Capitalists moved manufacturing to Asia because it was cheaper.
