Capitalists closed the coal mines too.

Modern day mining techniques require a small fraction of the manual labor they used to: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountaintop_removal_mining

(Of course they also probably ruin the environment, but nobody seems to give a shit about that.)

I would argue that in many places closing coal mines was the policy and governments did pass laws to speed up the process. Not really the case with manufacturing plants.
