Yes, but you can just carry encrypted hard drive with you. Hiding encrypted data is useful pretty much only for legal reasons. You want to take it across border and are worried TSA agent will force you to decrypt it or something. What is safer in that case? Carrying a USB stick with hidden encrypted partition or not carrying anything at all and downloading the data later? I would say the latter. Smuggling encrypted data through custom checks into a war zone with limited internet access is the cool but unlikely spy games scenario I was talking about. Encrypted microSD card would be even more secure in that case.

I would upload encrypt file somewhere and download it when needed. If you’re worried someone will actually access your USB stick looking for encrypted data, why carry it at all? It’s cool if you want to pretend you’re a spy or something but it’s not very practical.

I understand the app is great

It’s not even that great anymore. In the recent years the app got bigger and bigger, the UI more confusing, it got intrusive features that are impossible to disable while not adding anything of value.

For example, it started playing distracting, ugly. looped videos by default with no clear way to disable this. At the same time it became impossible to say “don’t play this song even again”.

I think the idea is that the data is encrypted on the phone and password is needed to decrypt it. If Apple can load (decrypt) data without your password then they can decrypt it anytime they want, even you don’t want them to.

Yeah, don’t download random files or giver your credentials to random pages, on both public and private WiFi. As long as you don’t do stupid things everyone uses https now so you’ll be fine.

For now, it sounds like the US and the EU are effectively the same on this matter.

One is as of now sending police to interrogate people over text messages and the other is not even scanning anything locally (Chat Control 1.0 allows scanning but no one is actually doing this). “Effectively the same…” People have lost all sense of proportion on this. One has currently implemented automated system to alarm police about possible school shootings based on a single text message where police is actually responding in minutes (not to mention full monitoring of kids school computers and actual police officers assaulting children in schools!) and the other doesn’t even consider school shooting a meaningful risk and does not surveils kids or teachers in any way. Yes, you’re right. It’s pretty much the same.

Chat Control was never about scanning text messages, it’s about scanning media to prevent propagation of CSAM. E2EE is very specifically protected and all scanning has to be done client side. Chat Control will “undermine encryption” only in the sense that messenger apps could check shared media files. If it’s even passed it could in theory lead to similar situation (false positives on some media) but right now nothing like this is happening and it’s not clear if it will ever happen while in US police is already being sent to people over texts to friends. So while I agree that we should be vigilant and Chat Control in its current form is not a move in the right direction screaming how EU is oppressing everyone is an exaggeration.

And then people will say that EU is an oppressive state because it has a draft of a law that doesn’t even come close to what US is doing already.
