You can now "watch" posts and threads for new replies in Catodon

Misskey v12 (and therefore Firefish too) had a feature where you could "watch" a post and get notifications, which was removed in v13. We re-implemented it, but our implementation is only about replies - the old Misskey feature notified about reactions and reposts too, which could get annoying soon, we're focusing on the discussion. Watching a post means you'll get notified for all direct replies to that post; top level (parentless) posts also give the option to watch the full thread, and get notifications for each reply and subreply under it.

We have also added a "Watching" tab in your Bookmarks page, where you can easily find all posts and threads you've subscribed to for notifications.

Merged in develop today, deployed on catodon.rocks, will be in the next stable - which is coming soon!

Sharkey migration compatibility: no-data-loss window closes at end of 26.x

Attention, admins!

So far, all of Catodon's database changes have been additive - even though we've removed or replaced several Misskey/Sharkey features, nothing has been deleted at the database level. This means Sharkey admins trying out Catodon can currently migrate back with zero data loss if they change their minds.

At some point, though, we want to do a proper cleanup of the database. So we're announcing our plan now: Catodon → Sharkey migration with no data loss will be supported through the end of the year (all 26.x releases).

Starting with 2027 releases, migrating back to Sharkey will still be possible, but will most likely involve some data loss in secondary features.

You can now set your post's language in Catodon

Recently merged in develop, will be in the next stable version. Mastodon-compatible language setting per post. You can also set the main languages you use, for easy access.

Catodon admins: We have dropped Redis for Valkey on develop

If you're deploying the develop branch, I would strongly suggest staying on 26.9.0 for the time being. Trying to upgrade with your usual path will break your server, so please wait until we provide detailed and tested documentation for the upgrade. Ideally, wait until the next stable - it will be worth it =)

Catodon 26.9.0 - what's new

- Multi-server accounts - you can now sign in or sign up on any other Misskey- or Mastodon-API server, not just this one. Works with Pixelfed GoToSocial, Akkoma, and the Misskey family too.
- Customizable timelines - pick what fills your Home slot and arrange up to 9 tabs from Following, your other accounts, forums, RSS, antennas, lists, and more. Syncs across devices.
- New media timeline with a masonry layout.
- Quote posts that are compatible with Mastodon's implementation, federated via FEP-044f.
- Hashtag following - follow tags natively, federated, with a hover preview and Custom feed support.
- PeerTube video streaming - remote PeerTube videos now stream over HLS instead of just linking out.
- Blogs got content warnings and per-blog privacy settings, plus a raw HTML mode in the editor.
- Right-to-left language support - the whole UI now mirrors properly for RTL languages.
- ALTCHA added as the default self-hosted, privacy-friendly captcha option.
- A big security pass: closed several SSRF holes (URL previews, RSS fetching, JSON-LD verification), fixed a password-reset bug that let a moderator reset another admin's password, tightened 2FA/TOTP replay protection, patched a few data-visibility leaks, and pulled in ~90 hardening fixes adapted from upstream Sharkey. Nothing here was known to be actively exploited, but if you're running your own instance, update promptly.
- Plus a long tail of smaller fixes: broken federation edge cases (forums, blog permalinks, PeerTube lookups), a mention-notification race, sharper remote media, and assorted UI polish.

Catodon 26.9.0-rc.1 released!

Practically the second RC for 26.9.0 after 26.8.0-rc.1, since August passed and that release version is now outdated.

Several bug fixes/performance improvements since the last RC, and a big code/lint cleanup by AntoineÐ, plus updated documentation.

This is also the first Catodon release that comes with a pre-built Docker image 🥳

Catodon now has a core team

I am no longer on my own in Catodon! I'm happy to announce that @AntoineD@kwak.cab and @Sproid@bohio.icu have joined the project, so I wanna welcome them, and say that we are working even faster now! It's exciting to watch the project become a group effort - this is half the fun!

Catodon 26.8.0-rc.1 released!

Release candidate for Catodon 26.8.0

Some major changes:

Customizable timelines - configurable Home slot + up to 9 reorderable tabs (server-synced), admin default timelines/theme/language/forums, plus a new Media timeline.
Multi-server accounts - login with remote Catodon accounts, but also Mastodon, Misskey, Sharkey, Pixelfed, Friendica etc (any platform that supports the Misskey or Mastodon API).
Featured hashtags & profiles (Mastodon-style) with federation.
Mastodon-compatible rel="me" verification badges.
Remote PeerTube/HLS video streaming and video-post player UX.
ALTCHA bot protection by default.

Catodon development update 22/8/2026

I'm back from vacation and have started fully working again towards the next Catodon stable release, which will probably be 26.9.0 - I decided to add a couple more major features, plus there are a few bugs reported on codefloe, so I don't think we can make it for August.

BUT! Catodon.rocks now has multi server accounts - meaning you can not only switch between local catodon accounts, but you can also connect your Mastodon, Misskey, Pixelfed, Friendica etc accounts and use them through Catodon's UI! There is also a masonry layout added for the new Media timeline, based on the feedback we got in this post. Both features include significant changes and there will definitely be some bugs, so please test them and report anything that seems off to you or you think could be improved. It will take a little time to iron everything out, but 26.9.0 will be a huge step for Catodon!

What would you like to see in a "Media" timeline?

I am adding an Instagram-inspired Media timeline, based on Home (Following), and I'm wondering what would people want from something like that. For example, should it include only photos and videos, or audio files too? And anything else I might be missing (never used Instagram tbh). Thanks!

Catodon repo moved to Codefloe

Following Codeberg's recent decisions about projects developed with the use of AI, we have moved to @codefloe@social.tchncs.de . The new Catodon repo url is https://codefloe.com/catodon/catodon - please update your git remote!

We are thankful to Codeberg for hosting us so far, but we will not apologize for utilizing one of the biggest technological breakthroughs in decades for the development of open source software, nor for spending countless hours in order to create a great fediverse platform with unique features, bridging the microblogging and the threadiverse sides of fedi. If you need to judge the project, you can judge it by the end result instead of the tools we use for development.

We prefer not to be judged for just doing what we love and making it available to everyone for free, though, so we're excited to join Codefloe!

Catodon now has built-in bot protection by default

We had some complaints about hCaptcha recently on catodon.rocks, and I didn't like the fact that you have to rely on other services and that the default Bot protection ("None") is "Not recommended" anyway, so I integrated ALTCHA in Catodon, which will be the default on new servers - no further action needed. Also added rate limiting to signups for extra protection.

Catodon is now up to date with Sharkey's develop

Catodon was supposed to be based on Sharkey's stable branch, but since Sharkey hasn't had a new non-security release for around a year (latest stable is based on Misskey from April 2025), I went through the commits that have been made on develop since then, and merged the ones that apply to Catodon, or adapted them wherever needed. Some bug fixes were already fixed independently on Catodon, but there were a lot of upstream fixes and performance improvements that I merged (mostly the amazing work Hazelnoot has done on Sharkey), resulting in over 100 new commits.

So, Catodon's next stable version, 26.8.0, will be up to date with Sharkey's latest develop where it matters/applies. If Sharkey stays stagnant, I might start merging commits directly from Misskey, but I'll give it some time, hopefully Sharkey gets back on its feet soon 🙏

Hello Catodon!

The forum description says that "Test messages will be sent here", so I figured you wouldn't mind too much if I test the federation of that group thingy.

You can get your revenge by trying to post something to the !testgroup@staging3.plamenu.com group, though I'm even less sure that it works right now.
