What did you like about the film *The Breakfast Club* (1985) and with which characters could you identify, and why?

There was another post that got deleted which made me interested in “The Breakfast Club”. Maybe we can continue the discussion here?

People said Allison is a cool character and that people like Allison turned out to be good people in their experience. What do you think about that?

Others said, you must see this movie if you’re one of those “movie nerds” as it’s cinematographically competent. @southsamurai@sh.itjust.works wrote a whole essay on it (thanks btw).

What other movies tried to copy The Breakfast Club and failed? Or succeeded?

GenX Here: What's Your Take on "The Breakfast Club"?

It was the movie of the day when I was coming of age. I wasn’t a Molly Ringwald fan but did think Ally Sheedy was a great actor. Everyone my age at the time was all about Molly (and then all about a different kind of Molly 20 years later…), but the movie was a fad frenzy that I never saw until it came out on VHS (I grew up on a ranch). I was in 5th grade in 1985 when it originally came out. The local video rental place in town finally got the tape a few years later.

When I watched it, I identified halfway between the nerd (Anthony Michael Hall) and the social reject (Judd Nelson). I had the brain and the bad home, so I didn’t exactly fit neatly into John Hugh’s little compartments.

I still don’t at 52 and it shows.

But I’m sure plenty of people from younger generations have seen the movie. Maybe they were forced to watch it via parents reminiscing about the “great 80’s”, or stayed in some hotel where they had cable and it was the only thing to watch besides Supermarket Sweep, or – just said “hell with it” and streamed the damn thing.

So please, I’m looking for more than opinions (or God forbid, political BS) – I want perspective. I want your thoughts and emotions and I’ll go first:

I really thought it sucked that the “nerd” left alone. Everyone left with a soulmate but him. I also thought the movie completely avoided the whole rumor mill of “Brian’s dad is the JANITOR!!!”. Coming from a bad home, I really never wanted to introduce “badness” into anyone’s home. I wanted an escape from my own home, albeit not with Molly. The whole weed thing – actually – was probably one of the most honest takes on the film.

That’s my take. What’s yours? And thank you!

What are your office pet peeves?

Given that office work is a common form of employment on Lemmy, and given our higher-than average technical ability, I’m interested to hear what bothers you most.

For me: coworker says “I’m old fashioned” and refuses to employ the simplest keyboard shortcuts (using arrow keys to navigate excel, using Ctrl+C instead of the mouse, et cetera) and then complains about how much their wrist hurts because of their mouse.

Do your parents speak different native languages? If so, what do they speak in common?

American, my family only speaks English, but my teacher was talking about India’s 22 official languages and how they vary by region. He also talked about English kind of uniting them and being the common language for communication and how this couple had a man and a woman from different regions who both spoke English.

Is this weird to you or am I overthinking it?

So basically I’m 23 years old and I’m a male, I am currently staying over at my grandmother’s house Because my family just moved out of our old house and we’re kinda like in different places right now so I’m staying with her for the “temporary foreseeable future.” Thing is, when I was at my old home, I engaged in self pleasure (masturbation) pretty much every day with no problem. Now I’m in her guest room, and there’s family photos EVERYWHERE, like not just adults but mainly her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as well. And I knew the layout of the room before I moved in and knew it was gonna be an awkward issue. Last night I ended up doing it with the lights off. And I was just watching XXX content on my phone, and I was trying to remained focused on my phone but it was just like the awkwardness of the whole thing and me knowing there were pictures of children in there the whole time. I only like a couple of times looked at my surroundings and the walls around me during the moment just…because I tend to look around when I’m already weirded out. I ended finishing. But I was wondering has anyone else been through this same situation and do you think this makes me weird. Any advice helps.

Should there be freedom of movement with Canada & USA?

For perspective: all EU states have freedom of movement for their citizens (meaning an national identity card is valid for crossing borders) like you can visit Germany as a Spaniard for instance up to 180 days (includes both Switzerland & Liechtenstein), applies to every country within the EEA. Permanent residency is guaranteed for EU citizens after 180 days given you must work, study & have sufficient funds and health insurance.

It’s because the US has the Derby Line which is in Vermont (Stanstead, Quebec) as it has a distinct border clearly marking which parts belong to Canada and the US (like that area is divided, taxed twice by both countries, and border checkpoints everywhere) but would an EU-style freedom of movement remove that by allowing citizens of both Canada and US cross freely (ID’s from both nations become valid travel documents).

However, that would need cooperation with both governments and opinions from the populace whether they’ll condone freedom of movement between Canada and the US (as in American people who live in Point Roberts, WA can cross into Canada as if it’s another state). That means Alaska is accessible for Canadians on a road trip who live in Yukon province (put it this way: both US & Canadian citizens can stay in either nation for 3 months).

How long is an average high school day in your culture/country?

USA: Typically for us, about 7-ish hours, I have to go in the building before classes start before then though, making it about 8 hours. Sometimes, we have half days, but they’re pretty rare. We have all our classes, they’re just very condensed 4-5 hours.

Here, we start at like 07:00 (Mondays 08:10 or so) and we end at 14:50.

Norway: 6-7 hours apparently, from 08:00-14:00 (2: p.m.) or 15:00. (3 p.m.)

Is it normal for docs to look at privates when you growing up? What is normal?[TW for medical stuff]

I ask because growing up it happened almost every single year to the point where, whenever I went to the doctor, I would get severe anxiety. I got a physical once for nursing school and the APRN said my heart sounded like I was having severe anxiety, I was 20 something years old.

I understand that, generally, providers do this to check on people’s development, such as testicles dropping, hair, deformities, etc.

But then I hear people talking about how that was never their experience. Ever.

When I have kiddos, I want them to feel safe around the doctor. I want them to feel like they have autonomy over their own body, not the doctor just pulling your shit down and touching you while you are laying down.

TIA

What is the name of this graphic design style?

I’m looking for the name of the graphic style that TV channels like Fox and HBO used between 2004 and 2008. I asked a friend who knows more about this and he gave me this answer.

Because of its use of auroras, trails and futuristic intention it could be categorized within the frutiger aero, but it is not exactly.

I’ve been looking at images of the graphic style mentioned, but it doesn’t quite match what I’m looking for, so I’m asking for help. If the graphic style doesn’t have a name, you can suggest TV channels or people who have a similar or the same graphic style (a video would be even better). To clarify, this video exemplifies the style I’m looking for, not only in terms of visuals but also music and sound effects, like the holographic projector sound you hear in the video. If you know any song in that style or a similar one, please recommend them as well.

Is there a Japanese equivalent to what I'm looking for?

Basically, making a story that takes place in Japan and I want two twin girls to be in the story. These twin girls speak Japanese but are not from Japan and I would make them, say, English if it were in the USA or Portuguese if it were in Brazil, but Japanese is only really spoken in one country. I suppose there are, however, other countries with a large Japanese-speaking population. Maybe they could be Japanese-Brazilians? Grew up with the Japanese language and all, just born and raised in Brazil and came to Japan later in life?
