Big Tech spent years designing platforms that steal our attention, then sold us AI tools to compensate for the time we lost. Now apparently even spending time with your kids is inefficient. The endgame is becoming obvious: humans do the work, AI gets the attention, and Silicon Valley collects the subscription fees. Apparently being a parent is just another productivity bottleneck.

Is that even true? That might only be in relation to other animals, not to robots. Humans do a lot of useless things like fart and laugh. Robots don’t. Even from an energy perspective, if a human takes 2,000 kilocalories to go about their day, that’s 8,400,000 joules or 2.3 kWh. A laptop battery is around 75 Wh, so that’s around 30 laptop batteries for 16 hours of activity, many of which might just be sitting down at a desk to think.

a laptop isnt capable of even a teeny tiny baby fraction of what a human brain can do. the only thing a laptop can do better than a human is calculating and data recall. the entire reason we made computers was to augment those weaknesses in our minds, because theyre so useful. but in terms of data processing, learning, prediction, planning, a laptop is basically an abacus being compared to a supercomputer, and thats being extremely generous to the abacus. human brains have had billions of years of evolution demanding more performant brains under severe energy restrictions. yeah we’re way way way more efficient than any computer.

This is a post about AI. While a computer will probably not in the near future be able to simulate a human brain fully, artificial intelligence models are getting scarily close to being able to pretend to do everything that a human can do. That’s what I was getting at. But of course, one should still not lose track of the overall point here that replacing the human experience with AI is completely missing the plot, even if it is “more efficient”.

Exactly what I was thinking. It makes me think of the book Four Thousand Weeks, and Chasing Daylight.

The former is about the trap of productivity and thinking you can fit more into your day than you can. Hint: no matter how much you get done in your day, you will want to try to fit in more

And the latter I don’t want to spoil but there was a quote along the lines of “Gene looked at all his colleagues who wanted more and thought, do they know when they will have enough?”, again the idea that we will always want more.

Reading to your child and spending time with them is enough. Forget all the other distractions the world offers you.

If we’re just talking about that specifically then actually it might be quite good to have an audio book that uses the parents’ voice, if we ignore privacy concerns about cloning your voice.

But the context of the post is saying more than that. They’re talking about not spending time with the child and reading to them, which I think most people disagree with. Just as I think most people would disagree with just giving a child an audiobook instead of reading to/with them, irrespective of whose voice is being used

The point is not that the children cannot listen to books but the bonding ritual that is reading to a child. Hearing the stories they like to hear. Having them ask for a specific one. Singing your child to sleep as well - you can still play music but the act of them watching you sing and hearing your voice is important.

Go listen to a Tonee or whatever when you get home from school while I’m making dinner and let your imagination run wild to Gabby’s Treehouse audio books but I’m reading Cinderella tonight.

His partner asked him to read to the baby and he said to her that he didn’t want to and that he could train an AI model to replicate his voice so he didn’t have to.

She could be a nagging and needy, codependent mess but he still knocked her up and stuck around so when your partner says “Why don’t you read to the baby, it’ll be cute.” You read to the damn baby.

This is all fake and likely words you could only utter on the green text comm, so really, let’s not worry about it but this guy did, in his shitpost, say “No, I’d rather not read to my baby.” Homeboy checked out before the damn thing could even crawl over to the electrical socket and take the easy way out of being raised by him.

Not “because AI”, I just hate people who don’t read to their kids… And AI. It’s a combination of two things I hate.

I love how you nerds one day are like, parents never get a break cause kids can’t play. Then this comes out, literally an incremental change of something that’s basically been going on for 60 years, and you all screech WANT TO IGNORE YOUR KIDS, bad parents!!!

Holy shit, AI has rotted your brain’s just by existing.

Recorded bed time stories have been a thing for 60 years. Parents getting 20 minutes off doesn’t mean they aren’t being read to.

I just want to go on record here and say that parent poster’s is an absolutely psychotic take from an person who should never have children and is likely already brain broken by AI.

Hey? Makeshift? You fucking made the child, now take care of it. You can fucking have a break IN LIKE 20 MINUTES WHEN YOUR KID FALLS ASLEEP TO THE BEDTIME STORY YOU JUST READ TO THEM, YOU BUFFOON. YOU HALFWIT. YOU ABSOLUTE WITLESS DISHCLOTH.

His spouse reasonably complained that an audiobook wouldn’t be in his voice. But Sng wasn’t to be outdone in the zero-effort-parenting department.

“I can train a voice model,” he countered, before addressing his readers: “Parenting hits different when you work in AI.”

Sometimes I feel bad about myself, but at least I don’t say stuff like this.

Fuck that, hop in and help out. Many of us are reversing this shit already and the more people doing that the better it gets. That goes for everyone else reading this that has not joined up yet too.

Want a better multiverse and life? Then work together and do. We will win against all this shit. Together. Work together locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally

Funny story. My cousin’s parent were super christian religious. The sect where they “speak in tongues”. Anyway, they would play bible readings on tape to him at bedtime. One night, they started the tape and left the room. Some time later they heard him screaming from Hus room. Of course they came running in and found him in tears, utterly panicked. The stereo had eaten the tape or died (I don’t remember), and he thought that god had died.

So yeah. Should be good.
