GrapheneOS imposes a set of restrictions on how generative AI can be used in our project and community. It isn't forbidden but rather we imposed rules based on actual issues.

Posts made in our forum, chat rooms, issue tracker and the rest of our project must be written by humans. There's an exception from this rule for translation and accessibility features. That means commit messages, pull request messages, bug reports and feature requests are expected to be written by humans, not a machine.

@GrapheneOS gonna be blunt:

your approach to this has been beyond abysmal with some of this account's replies to being intentionally deceptive to avoid being up front about graphene's use of AI.

i remember uttering a "what the f--" at seeing you post close to two paragraphs to someone asking if you used AI and it was literally a yes/no question.

people are already looking to kick your teeth in for the crime of not being google; so i suggest you don't give them any additional reasons to do so.

@halfashark We've been very clear we don't disallow people from using AI on their own as long as anything they submit for inclusion is fully understood and rewritten to our standards. This platform is filled with abuse and hate towards us based around lies and misrepresentations. Once again attacking us because of how we write responses is nothing new. There has been a whole lot of personal attacks, bullying and harassment over the past day. It's only the latest round of that endless cycle here.

@GrapheneOS At the risk of placing myself in the crossfire: I don't know if it needs saying here, but there's a lot of people here who unequivocally hate or dislike AI. For those who find the technology itself unethical, arguments about how it's used & whether it leads to software quality seem to hold little sway. They'd rather hear that it's not used in any capacity and that the project explicitly bans it.

@dandels GrapheneOS cannot ban it while using Linux, AOSP, Chromium and other upstream projects using it. The majority of the code we ship using it while claiming to ban it would be ridiculous performative nonsense.

We could only ban our own usage of it and remain ignorant of bugs easily found with it until external contributors report those and submit fixes which we usually need to rewrite. External contributors to the project are going to use it regardless of what we say as will exploit devs.
