By keeping him around it’s going to come up to what degree he holds influence or has final say, or if the new CEO is relying on him too heavily.

This is pretty par for the course as far as Fortune 50 companies go.
Why is this any different from any other company where CEO → Executive Chairman is an extremely common move?
