I wanna add flashy colors and borders to my besties to highlight their posts in my feed!

I guess I could just do it on the web using CSS selectors but would be nice to have a slick interface to do it with

Maybe I could store it in the mastodon notes field

@liaizon yea, you could select the posts in the timeline using `.status__wrapper:has(.status__display-name[href$="@liaizon")` to select popsts for different accounts. but where to get the actual css from is a good question. do you want people to set it themselves, like in the better years of myspace?

@computersandblues I want to set it myself but it would be nice to store it somewhere so I could see it in different apps

@liaizon couldn't you just publish it as a userstyle? the editing ui is made for editing stylesheets (though it's debatable whether it's actually good), and publishing it means you could reuse it wherever you can fetch the stylesheet (for example with "stylish" in firefox)

@computersandblues there are lots of ways it could be done, I don't think userstyles are the most userfriendly, they appeal to super nerds and then you have to install them in each browser you use etc

@liaizon It sounds very feasible until this part. Even if stored and then pulled by some apps (clients?), how would custom CSS apply to different apps?

@lnkr @computersandblues Mastodon (and many other servers) store custom note text for every account you follow, some apps (like Phanpy) add custom stuff in there. So then any app that supported it and was logged in to your account could pull out the css that was added.

I get the storing and fetching part. The problem is that CSS would target a particular HTML/DOM structure, class names, etc., which differ wildly between clients, and there is also various existing styles in those clients that it might conflict with. How would you actually make use of that?

Can we make other people's themes editable? I don't mean just for you. Like, you could add fox ears to someone and then everyone else sees it. I cannot think of anyway this could be abused soooo
