So am I right I’m guessing all these tools want closed Internet, where they own all the meaningful compute? That way you can rent access to information they control on a device they own? I feel like it’s all one big attempt to corner the market.

That’s pretty much what I’ve been expecting, if not as an outright intention certainly an eventuality.

I think this has existed as an intentional goal for a long time, albeit from another point of view. I’m thinking of like the piracy days of early 2000, then there was talk about how to lock down devices to prevent any sort of copying of media. The discussion sort of died when Spotify came. But I’m worrying that this development will trigger a reemergence of such a goal. As your self built computer will be more and more expensive, a new possibilty may open up to sell prebuilts that are more locked down. Similarly to how Android is moving from a more open device to a locked down one. HDMI forum locking down their protocols. This may become reality for your general purpose computer. Companies controlling compute and media streaming have a similar motive here, if they do set their mind to it to have this as a fully intentional goal… sigh

I hope it means that AMD is going to be more competitive on the parallel compute front. That’d put pressure on Nvidia to bring their prices down.

Righr now, Nvidia is able to charge an awful lot, because there’s little by way of alternatives.

Intel is starting to show some fight too. Not much, but the B70 isn’t a bad offering for the right use case.

Problem is NVIDIA has a complete stack on offer. Hardware (all the HW, not just the GPUs), networking and software stack are all tightly integrated. They didn’t do it overnight - they bought Mellanox awhile back, and Cumulus a little after that. That got them Infiniband & Ethernet products. It’s pretty impressive, and it’s a pretty big hill for the competition to compete with. Still, there’s hope.

Anthropic’s still considered a startup? I’d have thought that they would be too big for that.

This isn’t circular financing. They will sell more than they’ll invest and that money does not disappear when the bubble pops.

It’s not circular, but it is unclear under which conditions and when Anthropic will pay for the servers, as they don’t have enough money right now. The article says that they intend to lease some of the servers, but also that AMD will provide a “financial backstop”. It seems to me AMD is taking all the risk to get a foothold in the industry.
