I find the easiest way to think about it is kind of like email. You can have an account @gmail.com and still send mail to other servers @outlook.com. Your posts and comments will be stored on your local instance, as well as any instances that are subscribed to the community. When you post to a community on another instance, I think the text will be stored on both instances, but image uploads point back to the copy on your local instance.

I ignored all the email setup because I disabled signups anyway on my instance.
For DNS on my home server I use ddclient. It supports a ton of different DNS providers, so you can have your server automatically update its DNS record as soon as your IP changes.

I guarantee you the microcontroller that handles the wifi is 10x more powerful than what would be required to just run an offline schedule. There’s no processing involved… It’s not like this is using a camera + AI to see if your cat is too fat.
Edit: I just looked up this model and its actual features… it’s not that far off, since it seems to run image recognition to tell when the cat is eating. If they’re streaming video back to the cloud for processing, that sounds even worse than what I was expecting. It would be entirely possible to run a small image recognition model locally in a product like this.
There are much simpler solutions like the ones that detect a chip in the pets collar (or the embedded id chip most pets have)

Well, the data we do have is that the flight was just under 30 minutes and very likely under 100 miles.
From the Wikipedia on airline fuel efficiency:
The worst-performing flights are short trips of from 500 to 1500 kilometers because the fuel used for takeoff is relatively large compared to the amount expended in the cruise segment, and because less fuel-efficient regional jets are typically used on shorter flights.
In the example values table, the most efficient plane for a 560km trip burns 0.92 kg of fuel per km, so doing some rough math and assuming the electric plane travelled 100 miles, that would be roughly 148kg of fuel, or 50 gallons (190L).
At current jet fuel prices ( $3.76/gallon ) that’s about $188 US in jet fuel as a rough estimate. It’s unclear if the test flight went up to full altitude or if the plane was at full weight, so a fair comparison might have used even half as much jet fuel.
Edit: From some of the other comments, it seems like they might have only considered flight time as cruising time, not takeoff and landing, so my numbers will be quite far off if that’s the case. My gut feeling is that this is probably the case, because this seems like too big a difference otherwise.
The point still stands… that does not look like a GTX 1650? Unless someone swapped the cooler on it, that seems like a fake card or hacked firmware to me

I think you’re confusing your units for power vs energy. 3.5GWh (Gigawatt-hours) says nothing about the size of a power plant without also providing a time period that energy was generated in. You likely mean 3.5GW (Gigawatts), which is a measure of instantaneous power (in this case peak power). A 3.5GW plant generates 3.5GWh in 1 hour.

Unless you’re renting a GPU instance, I highly doubt your VPS is in one of these 1GW AI facilities, they’re mostly used privately by companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, or other companies specifically renting AI training capacity.
AWS has had existing datacenters for decades now and while they’re quite large, they’re a fraction of the size the AI industry is demanding. They were also built before regulations started getting changed in favor of more datacenters, so they’re actually following the zoning rules about noise, water, and power consumption.

The type of datacenters running lemmy and other services are nothing like the AI datacenters being built. Some of the AI datacenters are literally 1000x bigger in terms of power consumption than existing data center buildings are using. They’re trying to build a 10 Gigawatt AI datacenter in Ohio, and it will need its own power station to run it.
I own my server and colocate it, and it’s sitting in what looks like a normal office building. You would never know from the sidewalk directly outside that there’s a hub for AWS and Google Cloud right there. The amount of cooling required is small enough they can just use regular air conditioning units on the roof, and none of this evaporating water crap.

Well, it really depends on how the notification is sent. Most people don’t have push notifications set up on YouTube, so the spike wouldn’t be crazy high there. Even a few 1000 people requesting a video at once could overwhelm a single server’s bandwidth though.
I completely guessed at the 2% number if they were on another platform that sent out emails or push notifications. But I’m sure they’d also lose a huge chunk of those subscribers when moving platforms.

25M subscribers means 25M people getting notified to come watch a video all at once. They could easily end up with a half million requests to buffer the new video all at once, and that would take down anything short of a full CDN to handle local geo-caching. It wouldn’t be cheap to handle the burst loads of new releases.
