I've been fairly tangential to D&D, and have been thinking of getting into it, but - what the crap is up with all the shame on the fighter class?

i think the idea is that the fighter class is considered the most "boring", especially when a new (presumably human male) player joins a group, starts their first game and most often creates a "human male fighter", because they have yet to engage their creativity on that subject matter

It feels a lot like vanilla-shaming in sex. Just because one doesn't have to rely on cheap hijinks to show you a good time (or kick your ass, for that matter) doesn't mean they're a bad character.
I, for one, am in love with "Badass Normal" and "The Only Sane Man" archetype. You know, a reliable person, the kind of guy who will just show up and get shit done.
Yeah-yeah, the system allows you to be quirky and creative with your class and race but, to be honest, "quirky" doesn't stand out in the crowd of "quirky" all that much. In the land of "Super-" - nobody is.
