I do think individual (not species) inclination played a bigger role than people usually imagine. We frame evolution as kind of a mechanical inevitability when we teach it in schools (at least when I was taught) and this misses some important complexity.

It also misses an opportunity teach the species problem in biology which I find super intriguing.
