@drwho I'm skilled in *command-line* Linux, like ssh to a server and do something. That's because I'm totally blind, and Linux desktop accessibility, especially from scratch and especially from live USB, is something questionable, so to say. I'm not saying it's impossible though, just needs more time and effort. Thanks!

Folks, I need help. A friend of mine handed me a nearly dead HDD with tons of photos and documents. It's a WD My Passport 500 GB, very old, making funny noises but not too much. Windows sees it, diskpart says file system: raw.
What is the best way of attempting to recover the data? We don't care about the HDD itself, just the files on it.
After some investigation I found GNU DdRescue (needs to load into Ubuntu which is a bit daunting, I have no experience working with Linux Desktop and screen readers really); R-Studio and a couple more pieces of software for Windows.
Any ideas, comments, suggestions are hugely appreciated.
UPDATE. From the replies I've gotten so far (thank you so much folks!), I think I was not clear enough: what I count to do is to copy the HDD byte by byte into an img file, then calmly work on that copy. Thanks again!

I still don't understand why #ClaudeCode mixes American and British spelling constantly, it irritates me as hell.

There are often periods in a person's life when they feel like nothing has any meaning. Sometimes you have no motivation, no desire, and no mood for anything at all. I think if I hadn't spent all summer learning Greek, I would have ended up in exactly that situation. Because apart from that, there wasn't much variety in my life. Of course, I met up with friends, and I even went to a small concert, but still.
But now I'm ready for anything, because all that studying has finally paid off. Even if it's only for two semesters, thanks to the elective courses at my university, I've been accepted into the Modern Greek program. Just barely, exactly enough for me to attend these courses and meet their requirements. But I got in, and they're happy to have me and are looking forward to having me there, because I successfully passed the assessment.
And that gives me a new push to keep doing everything I'm doing, even when I have absolutely no motivation left. Because sometimes the result comes precisely after it feels like you don't have the strength to keep going anymore.
Now all that's left is to somehow make a Greek voice for RHVoice so I don't have to listen to this horrible eSpeak anymore. 😂

@elettrona Sometimes, you find that the communities who say they're the most open, most progressive, more welcoming, most inviting, most accepting, and most open minded, are actually just like the other side except these people don't think they can be ableist or otherwise wrong about anything, so instead of just plainly saying "we don't care about you", they'll say "we love you but if you use AI, you're a Nazi," or that one thing where you're disabled but somehow on the side of the people who hate you. I first found this with Linux. How can an OS that says it's "your" OS be inaccessible if it was made for me? So what people say means very little to me. What they do and how they treat me means a lot more.

@elettrona I used to consider myself as left-centrist before, but after a couple years of fediverse, also after seeing the tax system and other leftist narratives, — well, I'm not anymore.

See? See? Now you start understanding why I constantly talk about far left delusions and unwelcoming nature of most of the Fediverse. As soon as you don't agree with them in their radicalism, you are a fascist. You talk about far-right ableists, but you'll understand that they are a minority, really radicals (as bad as far-left radicals though).

Now that so many TTS engines have been ported to NVDA, does anyone happen to know if there are any speech synthesizers besides Vocalizer that support Greek? If so, where could I get them? I know about eSpeak, and it even needed a bit of tweaking in NVDA because unfortunately it's not perfect. But I'd be curious to know if there are any others.
