Well, my experience contradicts your last paragraph...
The question is really when people try to dip their toes in the water, not once they have decided that they will try it.
The later won't, as you wrote, be deterred by writing three lines.
The former certainly may.
It's not possible to judge in advance how much (or less) we lose by deterring them, even if yes, many will not stay.

Not sure if I contributed much (in quality) but I certainly contributed much in quantity since then, and when I joined the Fediverse after first hearing about it, I'm not sure I would have been able to write these three lines rather than being discouraged.
I feel your pain but maybe don't dismiss the discouraging aspect of friction...
