PSA: the call for applications to https://hackerinitiative.org/grant-guidelines/ is open and due by Nov 9. If you're a student, independent security or privacy researcher or individual and looking to make open source contributions and could be empowered by a few thousand dollars of funding, this is a possible fit.
The application form looks do-able in a couple of hours if you've already got a project in mind. They reached out to me and asked me to help get the word out that they are looking for applications, and I was assured that the theme for the cycle is just a theme - don't get tripped up if what you want to do doesn't fall in line with the theme. It's more important that you're in line with the grant guidelines highlighted in the link above.
In the end, they're looking to support hackers that contribute to the community.
