Honestly I kinda think open source is reaching the point where its tendency for cooption is clear.

The ruling ideas of any society are those of the ruling class. Open source is a social process mediated openly in capitalist society. Capitalists aim to enclose any common resource into private hands. Open source will die out of its informal structure, out of its lack of ability to enforce political principles for the whole project, and out of its lack of revolutionary consciousness or organisation.

Every time a project falls to slop I think "We need a software division of a communist party tied to the masses. The software stays true to communist principles, which themselves stay true to the liberation of the proletariat via feedback with the proletariat."

Not having the party means a tendency to fall back down to the lowest common denominator, the convenience of the slop. Having that party disconnected with the masses means it dissolves into a cult, a dead esoteric project.
