I use Munin for monitoring and XMPP for alerts via go-sendxmpp. That way I just configure munin like this:
contact.admin.command go-sendxmpp -u [bot_username] --password [bot_password] [contact]
And that sends me messages to my main XMPP account whenever my servers breach a limit
