Because to compete with reddit, you need reddit funds. To get those funds, you need to be inoffensive for the sponsors, and attractive to the lowest common denominator in order to attract eyeballs.

Lemmy isn’t just software, it’s community, formed by people. People who like it small, because once it grows too big, quality plummets. And that’s what people here want to prevent. If you want reddit, go to reddit.

That it has the model of reddit without it’s userbase.

Lemmy is never going to be as big as reddit. It financially cannot be. It doesn’t want to be.

Now, their are several options you can take from here. You can either spin up your own instance which abides by your own rules; join an existing instance and learn to live with the rules there; or don’t change anything, keep on whining about reality not altering itself to your whims, become bitter and annoyed and eventually leave.

Actually, with regards to data control, lemmy is the worst of both worlds.

Because it’s federated, your posts will be out there. If you accidentally post something you didn’t mean to like doxing yourself, there is much less of chance to permanently delete your data compared to a centralised service (like reddit).

I doubt it will ever come to that. Standards of living, life expectancy, consumer protections, the list goes on - all of these are way way worse in the US vs Europe.

But hey, at least you have guns that could have stopped this. With no negative side effects whatsoever.

I do agree with you on thing though - things are getting worse. But at least we will have you to lead the way, give us a hint what to prepare for, and to remind us that things could always be worse.

My bad, I went for the pentagon, since that was what the linked article was about. I always thought this was just a thing gun lovers said to themselves to justify keeping their murder weapons. I didn’t know things were actually so bad that, contrary to most of the rest of the civilised world, you really do need them to protect yourself from the government.
