this is the next logical step. raise the ‘price’ of ‘regular’ windows and systems with windows…
so the subscription looks like a ‘good’ deal.

they actually make money on many of those windows preinstalls due to all the bullshit they get paid to put on.

they don’t need ai to tell them ai is part of the reason. nor do they to know the other is because the company has turned to shit under vulture fund ownership, a trend that probably started even a little earlier than that—when they split print and broadcast into separate companies.

there’s no extra markup involved here for what is essentially a marketing thing.
they’re $35. which is also the price the ‘normal’ (not ‘collab’ edition) ones sell for direct on ka’s web site or at retailers like rei.

“don’t be evil” was a false promise. a gimmick. a marketing slogan. in practice, the policy was lost long before even the first pre-ipo options were promised to a new hire… way back around the time larry or sergey first day-dreamed of cashing-in ‘some day’.

“loyalty cards” are common. stores (and each of their 369354764 data sharing “partners”) get to track everything you buy and when. in exchange, you get token “discounts” on a small selection of products. some stores have done away with the actual physical cards, and use mobile phone apps or just the mobile phone number to track you.

when the $ numbers start getting big and scary, just extend the length some more to make it look ‘cheaper’… like 8 year car loans and 50 year mortgages.
