So, the good thing is you don’t need to know Russian. There was a wave where the US realized it was very behind in math and basically adopted the Soviet Pedagogy carte blanche. So you can find college level math textbooks that are in english and based on Soviet works from the time. The main textbook I have like this is something I inherited It’s simply called “Univeristy Mathematics I” and is by Jack R Britton and , R. Ben Kriegh of the University of Colorado, and Leon W. Rutland of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Library of Congress Catalogue Number is 65-11880 if that helps. I can’t tell you where to find it, but perhaps thriftbooks.com could be a good place to look for similar things? In it’s citations it lists The USSR Olympiad Problem Book: Selected Problems and Theorems of Elementary Mathematics, among other things I don’t feel like typing out. It has a lot of them.

It covers by Chapter: Fundamental Ideas, The Complex Number System, Algebraic Expressions Equations and Inequalities, Geometry and Real Numbers, Relations and Functions, Linear and Quadratic Equations, Trigonometric Functions, Limits and Continuity, The Derivative and the Inverse Derivative, Theorems on Derivatives, Further Aplications of the Derivative, The Definite Integral, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, The Calculus of Trigonometic and Hyperbolic Functions, and Formal Integration and Applications.

It’s very good for going into the conceptual level on everything and getting a complete understanding. As it is from the 1960s it doesn’t just assume you have a calculator either. So I’ve been using it to really build out my foundational understanding.

I also have some other books that expand into like Calc, Calc with Analytical Geometry, Applied Differential Equatons, etc. But this is the big like overview one where as those are about very specific things. I wish I had a PDF I could just send you, but it’s literally a physical book I got out of my dead grandfathers workshop. He was a chemical engineer and had a lot of old stuff lying around like that.

I had that happen with some random guy over the Iran war where I just made an offhand comment about how bad the US was doing and he starts going on a tirade about how America is #1 and yadda yadda. Anyway I kinda laughed and said I wanted to move on and was uncomfortable. A couple days later I saw him again and he said, “I looked it up and you were right about that one thing you mentioned but I’m still right about most of it.” Like sure buddy.

I think math education sucks. I hated math in school. I would get 0s because I was sitting there figuring out easier ways to get the right answer. Literally making up my own equations. And they’d say I had to do it the normal way or I’d get a 0. And so much of it is just pointlessly slow and boring. As an adult I got some math textbooks based on Soviet Pedagogy and went through them a bit. It was so much nicer. I still haven’t bothered to learn as much math as you have though. I still have the books so maybe eventually i will. I just have no like intense need to know it so have been doing other things. It’s something I do on days I’m bored with nothing to do. I’ve found that for me to actually learn something I have to understand it down to the most fundamental levels. If I’m just memorizing some equation then I won’t learn it. I’ll struggle. I need to deconstruct everything and know conceptually why the equation works the way it does.

When I was like 9 I was playing tag with this boy who did track. He was really cocky talking about how fast he is and how he’s gonna win. He get’s everyone else and then comes after me. So he is chasing me, and I run up this slide. As I hit the top my feet slip out from under me and I fall backwards and slam my back onto the platform at the top. It’s like a wooden square box with a slide on one side and a ladder on the other right? He stops and is shocked. Thinking I must be hurt bad. I just ignore the pain, roll sideways, push myself off the wall, slide down the ladder, land on the ground and twist my ankle but stay on my feet, and then sprint right past him on a twisted ankle and get to the “safe zone” (my friend’s porch). This boy was flabberghasted and I felt like a badass. Still think about it sometimes and I’m old as dirt.

That means it’s not a 100% instant response as some people are sleeping (can’t reply at the moment) but reply when you’re asleep.

If you go outside you’ll notice there’s this thing called the sky. It gets dark sometimes. Sometimes its bright. That’s because of the sun. People like to sleep when it is dark. When the sun is on the other side of the world its day time for them. But night time for you. So you are sleeping and they are awake. Even if we just used universal time for everyone, the sun would still do the same thing. And people would still be asleep while you are awake.

Why is it a problem? Literally every single major social media platform has an ideological slant. Twitter (X) is the nazi one, reddit is the like omega liberal vote blue no matter who one, facebook is mindless reaction, etc. If lemmy.world was considered the “default” instance I could say the same thing about it being different than my own political beliefs.

I think the problem is that people can’t handle seeing places they aren’t welcome anymore. Marxist-Leninists are allowed to have their own spaces, and do not have to cater to other peoples views. There is ALWAYS going to be a dominant ideology and a set of rules on each instance. You don’t agree with the ones lemmy.ml has. That’s okay.

Algorithmic social media silos people into their little boxes where they only see what they want to see. People are so used to that now that imo they’ve forgotten how to handle being faced with a place/group of people who just fundamentally disagree with them, and are not open to hearing what they have to say. Yet that is just reality. People need to learn to deal the fact those places and those people exist.
