I've now got Paperback on macOS auto updating! You have to move the .app into your applications folder, but it shows you the release notes, downloads it for you, and mounts it. Plus, the app is properly signed, so no gatekeeper warnings or anything, just the standard "this app was downloaded from the internet" warning you get from any new Mac app for the first time. That was fun.
