You could likely do some sort of distrubuted system in machines that had a reasonable graphics card, or shared memory like the M series macs. Have it silently intall a 30b parameter model or higher and somehow hide how that space is being used.

Local models are getting pretty good, and one focused on hacking / bot net behavior could probably do very well at that size.

But you’d notice it being used… fans would go off, frame rates drop etc. You’d probably need to code it to only do stuff when it seems idle?

You aren’t thinking about the scale properly.

“some fields”, “parking lots”, “maybe some windmills” is a wildly vast under estimation of what would be required to do it.

7.65GW is A LOT.

The USA doesn’t even have an active 1GWh solar farm today. It’s 900MW, and it is 4600-5000 acres and is 1.3 million panels

To run batteries off that, you need to 3-4x that would be a 30GWh generation capacity battery to run in the non sun periods and give some buffer for bad weather. Then you need a massive battery as well to store it all. It would need to be able to run at least for a couple days, which means it needs to store 367.2 GWh (48h storage), so my solar numbers above are actually probably wrong since you won’t fill that up in 1 day, but maybe that’s okay if the size is just an emergency amount. 122GWh battery would probably the be minimum for a perfect summer condition 100% of the time day/night cycle.

The largest upcoming battery installation in the USA is 1.15 GWh, which is not built yet.

I’m not saying don’t do it, but you’ve really glossed over the sheer scale of it, and I doubt they’d be able to easily put the solar field near the datacenter, so there’s extra costs around transmission lines as well.

Edit: For 30GW of solar you’re looking at around 153,333 acres, or about the size of Dallas Texas, before the battery storage

If you buy a phone and sell it after a year, you have ‘nothing’

If you buy it outright you spend $1000 and resell it for $500 you have $500

You lease it for $500 you still have $500

But that has to be your original plan to get a new phone.

Sometimes, the lease deals work in your favor and you’ll end up with more than the resell value. Sometimes you can get a really good outright deal too.

Edit: and without a lease deal, outright usually wins.

That’s a great point. If they aren’t scanning for things, they likely wouldn’t be held responsible, but if they are scanning things, now they are the arbiters of what gets passed on or not.

ChatGPT had an issue where someone got flagged for being a risk, they assessed it in person and decided not to action it, and then something happened. They’re being sued and the Canadian government is getting involved.

What has snapchat now actively decided not to action, where something bad happens, now that we know they read everything?

Anything that would do meaningful damage to a camera sensor will easily to that to human eyeballs if it refracts or gets reflected.

I don’t think that’s true? The lidars on Waymo have been known to damage camera sensors but are safe to the eyes. By damage, like a pixel or two go out, but that’s from a random hit. If you did it right you could do more damage.
