I don't like football. Nor do I like the values that the sport conveys.
However, today I felt a certain pride when I saw how a large majority of my people took to the streets to celebrate the victory of Athletic in the Copa del Rey, one of the Basque football teams competing in the Spanish football league. More than a million of our people celebrating in the streets the sporting achievement of 24 privileged youngsters, rich kids who have achieved fame and the respect of the people by kicking a ball. Idols of clay, for a people anaesthetised by football.
May the day come when the vast majority of my people show the same enthusiasm and energy to support our Korrika (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korrika), or the Aberri Eguna (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberri_Eguna) .... or, why not, to claim our right as a nation to have our own state.
