@darkwolf GrapheneOS is an open source privacy project with a development team spread around the world. It exists to protect people from corporate and government surveillance.

GrapheneOS isn't a business and our legal entity is a Canadian non-profit organization.

GrapheneOS is entirely funded by donations. The majority of the donations are made via cryptocurrency.

We pay people an hourly rate set in USD or CAD. We currently pay around 14 people with Ethereum donations and 1 person with CAD.

@darkwolf People's conversations, thoughts and financial transactions have been largely private for most of human history. Law enforcement still managed to do their jobs. They can continue to do so in a world where privacy technologies preserve historical privacy norms.

We use and support open source projects working on restoring the privacy provided by cash including Monero. Moving from cash to credit cards, PayPal, etc. is an ongoing privacy disaster. Bitcoin and Ethereum currently are too.

This reminds me of how Phil Zimmermann explained the importance of PGP back in 1991:

What if everyone believed that law-abiding citizens should use postcards for their mail? If a nonconformist tried to assert his privacy by using an envelope for his mail, it would draw suspicion. Perhaps the authorities would open his mail to see what he's hiding.

Don't let the status quo get in the way of progress. Don't let corner cases justify stripping away essential liberties.

@GrapheneOS @darkwolf I really don't get this discussion: @GrapheneOS is providing us with a superbly secure and polished alternative to privacy nightmares such as stock android or apple. If they choose to pay their devs in crypto (and the devs are happy with it), why should this be a problem? Also - if the developers feel they are more productive using AI - why shouldn't they?

Both technologies rely on dirty deals and undermining democracy, so that they get approved to steal stuff from people against their will, like land, water, and electricity. Crypto in particular has no way to mitigate speculative bubbles, or wallet theft; all transactions are final and any unethical activity is mathematically impossible to undo. Plus it's focusing on a technological solution, when our actual problem is people socially pressured into depending on money in the first place. And AI has literally driven people insane, with its smoke and mirrors fooling people into thinking it's a person, and done no one any good except bosses trying to steal the wages of call center girls, while again, being a massive resource drain extracted from people with neither their permission, nor any compensation.

So uh... those are a few of the ethical problems.

Wow. I don't know who sold you the idea of not owning your assets, but they're good 👍

And regarding the "AI"... For some reason it sounded like a rewrite of dozens of other people who don't understand it's value and just repeat one after another "making people insane", "done no one any good" without even trying to think critically and asking themselves questions like: "is this really true?", "are there any counter arguments?".

I can do without being able to impersonate my favorite celebraties and make them say swears, considering what it's doing to the farmland north of town.

Here. This is the problem. For some reason you seem to think that this is where "AI" is useful the most.

Using such logic I can make anything look bad.
Don't like cryptocurrencies? Good old money were used to harm people since they were invented.
Don't like "AI"? Human mind allowed to kill people and other living things in the most intricate ways.
Kitchen knives? Oh how many people were injured or killed by them.
Pigeons? Those flying rats spreading diseases!

When you start looking only for things that confirm your world view and ignore everything else, it's convenient. But that's called confirmation bias.
Try to start looking for something else. You can use cooking with kitchen knife as an example. When you're comfortable with that, try to test other beliefs.

P.S. That could be painful. I'm speaking from experience.

I did mention medicine actually, when I referred to the whole "driving people insane" thing. It's a medical condition called AI psychosis, and seems very odd to me that the same bots are being used to "help" people by pretending to be a therapist.

Cyber security, well there's that big patch making sparse, scattered changes to large portions of the Linux source code, to "fix" vulnerabilities, even though it's known that those algorithms will create and exploit bugs to appear to have succeeded.

But yeah I looked into it a bit. Still can't find a better use than making celebrities say silly things.

@npub1duxvwut8fsjfgcnujvg80h8z9tzwufz302l97u3n4lq92rrsm60qcydp0h Bitcoin's lack of on-chain privacy is a massive flaw. The mass surveillance enabled by the transparency blockchain is so far against the original ideals of the project.

Lightning doesn't provide strong privacy and isn't a solution to the lack of privacy in the Bitcoin base layer. Semi-centralized approaches as side chains aren't solving it either.

There's no fundamental blocker against Bitcoin implementing a shielded pool.
