Doesn’t matter what the goal is, the context of this particular discussion is that AI is benefiting at least some people by making their lives easier. And one guy who’s trying to argue ‘so what, it only matters if productivity goes up’.

That absolutely sounds like a win to me. Why is productivity gains the only thing that’s important? QoL is what matters. Unless you’re a capitalist overlord.

Not quite. Algorithms are definite, you get the same guaranteed output if you give the same input every time. AI is generally more fuzzy logic.

You’re getting direct examples of people its helped, and you keep brushing it off and asking what about everybody else. You’re obviously not going to get a single answer that affects everybody, and why do small successes not matter?

His analogy about turning off AI is bloody weird. Pick almost any technology from history. Chances are if you had turned it off a few short years after it was first introduced, it wouldn’t have had any major impact. Why would AI be any different?

Bad assumption on my part. Anyway yeah. Just an FYI since you were recommending it as a security practice. I have actually contacted European companies and had them remove geoblocks in the past by pointing out they were (probably unknowingly) breaking the law.

Btw I’m not sure if you’re aware, but this behaviour (blocking based on geographic ip) is literally illegal in the EU. I’m aware it’s not applicable to you since you’re in the states, just an FYI.

As this is an NA based publication, “overseas” would likely be Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania.

Unless they’re intending that their audience is only from the Americas, then no, overseas is based entirely on where their individual readers are.

Anyway, I feel like you may have misunderstood me a little. I’m not annoyed from a security perspective, I just found that to be superbly bad writing.

You do understand that ‘overseas’ means ‘anywhere not in my country’, correct? Not a few specific countries, but literally 90+% of the world, with the exact makeup of that 90% depending on where the company is.

Cybersecurity companies find resproxies challenging to tackle because the network traffic looks like it’s coming from an ordinary household, rather than a malicious hacker located overseas, as they might expect.

Ah, yes. Overseas, that wretched hive of scum and villainy, home of all malicious hackers and utterly devoid of any ordinary households.
