Artists understand that AI is bad for art. Why don’t programmers understand that we are artists?

@glyph I think programmers just happened to be too late into capitalism to become artists. For many, code has been foremost a way to earn a living and not a vehicle of creative expression. There’s this expectation of programmer’s labor to be streamlined for productivity and ✨business value ✨ — and unlike other forms of art where we expect novelty and fine execution, practically, one can commission “good enough” software to solve their problem. I believe this is what makes programming different, and since good-enough is the whole premise of AI and vibe coding, it’s not as easy to reject for an individual: low performers get replaced. We need collective action to push against our employers, AI companies, and (blergh) evangelists. In other words, we desperately need unions in the industry. Why we’re not seeing them everywhere is another question, to which I have no answer.
