@menelion @TheQuinbox There are a bunch of programs for the sake of which I use the computer. That is, just to use the most obvious example, I do a good deal of communication by email. If I didn't have Outlook or something like it, my computer wouldn't be a good email device. I would either not use it at all, use a far worse program, or something like that. I keep outlook open all the time, it closes very rarely and is one of the first programs I start when I boot. NVDA is the same. Paperback is the same. It is just always on, it's win+1 on the taskbar, it's one of the two or three programs I install without any exception on every machine, physical or virtual. Actually, come to think of it, I think PB, Remsound, and NVDA are basically it, there is not one windows machine I have which doesn't have them. All other programs are only on a few devices or on every device except one or two. It's not just books, I read almost everything in PB.
