@wakest my main concern there is that supporting the unicode makes some phishing technics more viable, like replacing some letters with undistinguishable ones in username or domain to impersonate some well known handle. Not sure how to address that one yet

@wakest can't search it on my control mastodon server either. I suspect federation being broken from their end
@wakest oh, actually no, I'm wrong. Maybe it's cached. I'll check
@wakest I think that is just the previous working mention from the thread getting copied to the reply box? Let's check, try replying to this post with a proper mention
@Аим_Нискажуя
I'll take a look at collections later. Reasonable to assume that unicode shenanigans are not fixed all across the board but hopefully some basic interactions are
@wakest bookwyrm search/follow should now work both ways, try again
@wakest fixed
@wakest That was fun but I feel like I'm done with bugfixing fiesta for today. Huge thanks!
@wakest I think I'll just offer the same option at the same place regardless of post's reported language. Updated.
Replying to @federation_test
@federation_test @wakest it backfired immediately hahahaha
@wakest can you check if it would even follow in any other direction that is not bookwyrm? Mastodon or something
@wakest I've enabled the inline translate, for the moment it uses the super evil chinese AIs (since I have it for free for a few months without breaking any terms of service and the performance/quality seems alright). I'll switch it for something non-evil later.
You can select which language you want to translate to at https://staging3.plamenu.com/settings/languages lemme know if it works or not
@wakest bookwyrm already federates on some basic level, see https://staging3.plamenu.com/@wobblywario@bookwyrm.social , I'll need to take a closer look on it and on neodb that's for sure.
As for the feature parity, as much as I like the everything app idea where you can author everything and federate with everyone I don't think I will be introducing new specialized "book reviews" sidebar tab or post type anytime soon, but I'd like to at least properly receive and display the activitypub objects, whatever they happen to contain

@wakest @wakest I'm running low on bug reports, feel free to throw anything you got in my direction
There is a very thin line between a group that you can join and a channel you can follow (channels will not be limited to video channels, there gonna be group-shaped channels where only the moderators can post but everyone can follow), so the correct wording there will have to wait for a bit
@wakest fixed! Not fixed-fixed, but perhaps fixed-enough, videos are on the channel
@wakest uhhhh yep that's also a group federation quirk that is effectively a bug. Attribution is there, but Plamenu never received the channel's boosts of those posts so they are missing from the channel page. And it's annoyingly easy to replicate too. I need some semi-dirty workaround there, hold on
1@wakest libretranslate would be a separate thing to self-host, I tried it locally but wasn't happy with the resource usage and translation quality either, I don't currently have it. Maybe I can use some public libretranslate instance
@wakest fixed? @fediforum_demos
Unfortunately borked names and descriptions are cached, so despite the fixes there is surely some other accounts on this instance that will still have the mangled info until plamenu receives/fetches their profiles again. I refreshed this one manually
@wakest I do have it! Currently it supports LibreTranslate, DeepL and local LLMs. I had it running with some small local model on the same server for a while, on paper it's cool privacy-friendly setup but it still was too slow and resource hungry so I recently turned it off and haven't connected to anything else yet.
Phanpy uses Google Translate through some unofficial ways https://github.com/cheeaun/translang-api . It's quite effective but I'm not super happy about the idea of sending fedi posts to google while potentially breaking their ToS and don't want to risk getting any abuse countermeasures on my servers. I'll figure something out soon and I'll let you know
