@tardis I think they just don't really get what these smart glasses can do and what they can not. The technology is still new, not every second person can afford such a thing. Fortunately I also didn't have to buy them myself, it's a long story how it all happened. But when I showed them what it can do, they were amazed. But again, that's not an excuse if they don't understand this technology. Nothing makes me to magically see.
The feeling when, after getting Meta smart glasses, everyone assumes that all my blindness-related problems have suddenly been solved. As if I can suddenly see.
Today I was looking for something in the kitchen that I could make myself some food with, but since both of my sisters tend to do the same thing in there, nothing is usually where I left it. So I asked if anyone knew where a specific frying pan I was looking for was...
"Oh, but you have smart glasses now, why are you asking us?"
And it’s not like I can even say they don't know me... I've spent my entire life with them.
No, guys. Smart glasses don't allow us to see as you do.

I generally never write about politics here. First of all, I don't consider myself competent enough in this area, and secondly, I'm fully aware that it's such a sensitive topic that, one way or another, it will inevitably end in an argument, and I don't want that. This time, it's not really going to be about politics either, but rather about mentality and the differences between countries.
Lately, I've been seeing more and more statements, especially from Russians, along the lines of refusing to engage with anything that wasn’t made in or isn’t available in the Russian Federation. My latest favorite was when someone commented under a post about podcasts that they weren't willing to listen to any podcast that wasn't made in Russia. I've also encountered people who, after running out of arguments, claimed that those of us who disagree with them must think that way simply because, being from Europe, we can't possibly understand their beliefs.
And even though I completely understand the situation that has developed, where someone is from shouldn't make such a huge difference - unless the people expressing these very strong opinions still somehow feel like they're living in the Soviet Union. These narrow-minded people tend to have equally strong arguments such as, "You shouldn’t agree with this person because they don't support Russia's actions", or "You shouldn't watch this blogger because they don't support Russia."
Just to be clear, I'm looking at this whole situation from the outside, and I'm not particularly taking anyone's side. Personally, I don't listen to any music that involves politics in one way or another. I don't consume that kind of content either. Not even when it's the politics of the side I happen to sympathize with more. Because I believe there's no place for politics in art, even if I would otherwise agree with the views of the artists in question.
But this way of thinking is just so foreign to me... It would be interesting to find out whether I've simply been randomly stumbling across these kinds of opinions more often lately, or whether this mentality has actually become more widespread.
I just read a post about how pointless it is to argue about matters of taste, about what constitutes good taste. And you know what? I completely agree with that, right up until someone's taste devolves to the level of a caveman.
I absolutely will argue with someone who listens to overly sexualized, pornographic music while they’re only 12 years old. I absolutely will argue with someone who romanticizes drugs in the name of good taste simply because they're considered cool among young people.
Of course, I agree that taste is something people will never all agree on, and that it's a very subjective thing. But just like freedom of speech has its limits (you have freedom of speech as long as you're not using it to restrict someone else’s freedom), I think matters of taste have their limits too.
Everyone talks about how terrible it is when people don't use alt text when posting an image. But you never hear anyone talk about the fact that even blind people often have ridiculously long names consisting mostly of emojis, and whatever letters they do contain are written using some font or Unicode characters that a screen reader simply can’t process at all.
On top of that, mixing Cyrillic and Latin letters in longer posts is apparently a trend in Russian communities, and there's even a dedicated NVDA addon specifically so blind people can read this kind of text properly.
And instead of doing anything about it, people even share posts like these, because hey, you can technically read them somehow...
