What an addoly written article. It reads like satire. I don’t think it is. But it reads like it.

I feel like I got so little substantive information from reading that.

Well, joking aside for a moment, I always strongly feel people should browse how they prefer.

That said, I don’t want to give up this that I have. Although I’m not a firefox purist - I did use Chrome-based (Edge was the last one) with uBlock but came back to Firefox after Chrome killed that.

But I’ve switched many times over the years. I was using Netscape Navigator when IE3 came out and had much better features. Then when third-party browsers supported tabs I switched. Then Firefox for a good while. For a long time, Chrome was too heavy for my machine. Then Firefox went bad for a while and I switched to Chrome. Back to Firefox, back to Chrome. I got spoiled on vertical tabs with Vivaldi and then I had to have that so I ended up on Edge because of the vertical tab and Chrome extension support. And now Firefox.

I’ve skipped over times I’ve used multiple browsers regularly, and I’ve probably forgotten some switched in there - it’s been a long long journey since 1994. lol.

I’ve grown picky over the decades, so yeah, for me, Firefox with uBlock Origin and Dark Reader and a vertical tab setup are sort of foundational / ground floor requirements for me. lol

It is slightly sensationalized in the sense that Meta didn’t run the ads, Meta allowed the ads to be run. Title implies Meta created the content, whereas Meta didn’t prevent the content from being distributed. Not great, but wildly different.

In fairness, it seems what is actually going on is that they are not sufficiently monitoring third-party advertising, not creating the material themselves.

I just hate it when we aren’t accurate about what’s going on. Not controlling your advertising is a much different problem. One that needs resolution, mind, but not nearly the same as Facebook itself creating such content.

This bullshit is getting out of hand.

I know it’s not nearly the same level, but over on reddit I participated in a thread. Nevermind full context, someone said something about “The first half of life [something]”, someone replied “and the second half of life [something]” and I jokingly said “And the third half of life, you’re dead.”

Couple replied to that - it was minorly amusing in context - and one of them said “Now I’m sad”. So I jokingly said “Well, good news is you won’t be sad when you’re dead”.

Within a few minutes, I got a warning from reddit and the comment removed.

So I appealed the warning (because if AI removes another comment, you get a 3 day suspension, then 7 day, then 30 day, then permanent), but also rephrased the commeny and basically make the joke while not even saying “dead”, but I also rolled my eyes at the reddit AI.

I almost immediately got a permanent ban.

THEN THE STUPIDEST BIT: They overturned the warning BUT KEPT THE PERMANENT BAN.

Fucking idiots.

Dont’ judge me for still spending some time on reddit, I mod a couple of places. THAT account is still going, but I also don’t use that account except to mod because of this bullshit with reddit that’s been getting worse.

Ah, no, see that’s gambling sanctioned by the oligarchs, so everyone knows there’s no way it’ll be touched.

(And frankly, besides a bit of needed reforms and regulation, the stock market itself isn’t all bad, it’s just been abused by the oligarchs)

Alright, so he got addicted to what felt like an easy source of knowledge. Can happen to anyone.

I guess I’m just tired of finding things to be upset about. I’ve lived more than five decades and it’s been outrage after outrage after outrage.

I’m tired, boss.

He’s admitted there was a problem and it got out of hand. If he changes, what’s the huge deal going forward?

We need social safety nets. We need universal health care. We need to kick fascists out of our government. And sure, we need to fix smaller problems, but jesus christ does every last thing have to be drama?

We shouldn’t give up, but not everything that is possible happens, so just be aware that most ventures fail. But of course keep trying. Like with Lemmy.

I’ll give it a go. It’s not that terrible, just mostly a lack of punctuation.

Being greedy for money can lead to infinite time spent chasing happiness that they will never obtain. The cycle repeats until something happens to stop it - usually they lose everything.

Your comment is spot on - Altman was going to be fired by cofounders for his malice. [I’m a little unsure here and didn’t pay attentio to Almatn’s difficulties, but I think the point is that he screwed up to the point of driving Microsoft employees away, but he stepped away rather than being fired. Employees were pushing for this because if they left, they would have lost money [vested, I assume] so in exchange for trying to protect thier wealth, they put up with Altman and that was a mistake. Also that contributed to recession that is going to hurt everyone’s wealth]

I believe that’s the gist. Granted, as it went on, it got a bit worse, but I think we can get much of the basic idea, which I think boils down to asshats seeking money at the cost of everything else will always contribute to everyone being hurt.

It’s all about networks. It’s not creating platforms that’s hard, it’s getting people to use them.
