Reminder: Please be aware of our upcoming transition for the CARIAD domain observatory, and the new CARIAD files available.
https://mastodon.iftas.org/@about.iftas.org@about.iftas.org/117008346672970963
Deprecation Notice: CARIAD Domain Observatory Transition
The CARIAD Domain Observatory Web service (cariad.fedicheck.iftas.org) is being shut down. To ensure server administrators and moderation teams can retain access to reliable, consensus-driven moderation data, IFTAS is transitioning to a suite of downloadable and subscribable denylist files.
IFTAS is providing direct access to these lists in our Community Library: https://about.iftas.org/library/denylist-resources/#IFTAS_Domain_Denylist_Resources
Moving forward, you can select from tiered consensus levels based on observed blocking activity across the network, alongside the human-curated lists maintained by IFTAS:
If you currently rely on automated scripts or tools pulling from cariad.fedicheck.iftas.org, please update your endpoints to point to the new resource files linked above. We don’t have a hard date for shutdown, but it will likely be by end of September 2026. To be clear, it is broken, you should stop using it as soon as you read this.
We want to acknowledge the broader community efforts pushing trust and safety forward:
With the rapid explosion of new domains federating, the operational overhead for volunteer admins and moderation teams has scaled exponentially. Federating with a new domain means opening an untrusted door; doing so safely requires real-time insight, shared metadata, and reliable reputational signals that don’t rely on single points of failure.
We firmly believe that the future of the Social Web rests on consent-based federation, where server administrators and users retain explicit control over who they connect with, backed by actionable, transparent reputational data. IFTAS is working on reputation metrics/signals to help identify common markers when encountering a new domain. More to come, watch this space!
As the ecosystem matures, IFTAS remains committed to supporting sustainable moderation infrastructure, advancing shared signals, and empowering server operators with the tools needed to keep the Fediverse safe, resilient, and connected.
If you need assistance selecting the right tier or denylist for your server, reach out on network @iftas or email contact@iftas.org

«Building a decentralized bulletin board (and accidentally reinventing Nostr)»
Let's build a bulletin board with no account, no sign-up, and no single server behind it. By the time we finish, we'll have accidentally reinvented two technologies that already existed: FidoNet (1984) and Nostr.

If you've been to #FediForum, and have something nice to say about how it was, we'd love to hear about it.
We have been redesigning FediForum.org, and one thing people keep telling us is that it needs to show quotes from attendees! Like you!
So send quotes our way! Thank you!!!

Hey, #Mastodon and #ActivityPub developers.
How much skew do you allow before rejecting a message?
I've just received something where the header is signed:
Mon, 31 Aug 2026 20:09:54 GMT
But the ActivityPub message was published:
Mon, 31 Aug 2026 19:58:36 GMT
That's a little over 10 minutes. Is that too much? Should I not care as long as the signature validates?

EmojiReact vs. Like w/ content?
Hm... FEP-c0e0: Emoji reactions details two ways to federate an Emoji reaction:
EmojiReact activityLike with content (as opposed to a regular Like, which has no content)In testing, I noticed that misskey (or at least, the site I was testing with, birb.space) sends the latter. I don't know what sends the former, and if NodeBB were to start federating out EmojiReact, would it be broadly understood?
Perhaps I should federate out both at once.

I just noticed that, if I look up a #Lemmy or #Piefed community on #Mastodon, I'll get a profile page but no posts!
Is that a bug in Mastodon? Or is there no standard #ActivityPub protocol for fetching content from a person/group that you aren't already following?
I seem to recall Mastodon adding a “fetch content from the other server” feature recently, but it sounded like a Mastodon-specific protocol extension was involved. That's…not great. It really should be universal.

Hi #FediAdmin - I ran across a weird instance, https://social.bawnet.io/, when its admin account followed me, and I'm curious if anyone knows anything more about it? Their admin account (named Neon Overlord) seems to be an LLM that follows admins of other fedi instances, and then the Storm Desk account (another LLM) summarizes some of the posts from those admins in its "state of the net" reports. But all of that is wrapped in a layer of ominous/esoteric language, for some reason. Doesn't appear to be outright malicious, as far as I can tell, but it's certainly odd, and I figure maybe other admins would like to be aware of it and/or preemptively block. 🤷
