I think the biggest concern for the average person would be feeling like the promises of Apple privacy would be severely compromised by this, regardless of whether that’s the case.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but apparently all iCloud backups are encrypted? So either Apple was thinking of grabbing an unlock key from somewhere to decrypt before sending you the phone, or they were just going to include an encrypted backup file (or something) that you’d have to enter your password to unlock upon receipt (and then presumably wait for the decrypting).

In this case, I was thinking of how this could be used to legitimize the decision a couple months ago to block the sale of all foreign-made routers.

(The decision is a terrible one, but I imagine MAGA people will use it to say “I told you so” while ignoring the fact that foreign brand Netgear got an exemption and at least temporary monopoly status.)

Oh, they don’t - that’s why they don’t talk about CSAM prevention until they have no other choice. Authoritarianism uses “it’s for the children” to justify their motives, but when something authoritarian can’t be excused (like forcing Facebook to promote their propaganda), then they attach something like this as an excuse.

i.e. they don’t care, they just know normal people do.

AI is the future of search

Thought terminating cliches are the future of online discourse.

The user experience of AI search is way to good

Search engine companies went out of their way to make normal searches worse, and then introduced AI search to keep you on their sites.

I thought everybody at this point understood enshittification at this point, but if not: of course a project at the first stage of enshittification acts better than a different product at the third stage of it.

No, the act of a company shoving something bad down people’s throats does not prove it’s what they wanted. You should know this.

We have polls that have calculated people’s sentiment. They are sick of AI .
