Thing is, if they’re requiring State IDs then there’s not really anything stopping them from asking for ID in physical stores, and getting a card or something that you then can use to register a social media account, therefore both meeting the requirements and making sure that your biometric data is being sent to a US weapons manufacturer just to access websites.
The problem is that this doesn’t really solve the problem. How is requiring an ID to access websites in France going to combat Russian propaganda bots that claim they’re French, for instance? How will it compel TikTok to make its software less addictive?
Like, what would the EU do if US coffee companies started to mix their coffee with cocaine for the expressive purpose of making it more addictive? Likely not mandate that drinking coffee requires a state ID. At the bare minimum they’d pull all of the coffee off the shelves and tell those companies that they can’t sell the coffee until they take the cocaine out. But if it’s a tech company, well, I guess we can just let them do whatever they want, we’ll regulate society to appeal to like, 5 or 6 people.
