Language learning friends?

Is there a community on Lemmy for connecting people who are learning a language?

For instance, I am learning Spanish, and I’m not yet at a level where I can converse with native speakers reliably, but it would be beneficial to have someone to practice with who was also learning, without having to pay for some tutoring service or something.

How effective are passive cooling techniques? Which are the cost-effective and easy to use ones?

Do things painting the roof white help to reduce the heat in a significant way? Have seen it being mentioned in videos on black vs white coloured cars.

Are there any drawbacks noted by people who tried it for roofs?

Is there a Spanish lemmy or fediverse?

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/52668267

My uncle is Mexican and doesn’t speak much English.

Is there any Spanish community in lemmy or in other parts of the fediverse? I’m looking for something that admits members without having to use an email address or a phone number, as privacy friendly as possible a network that won’t use data and posts to feed their LLM.

Menus and content have to be in Spanish because otherwise my uncle won’t understand it and won’t use it.

Intended use: mostly technical help, FOSS alternatives to proprietary applications and F-Droid.

How do gays in oppressive regimes access Grindr?

Just had a conversation with someone in Egypt about accessing Grindr. Apparently, the police will arrest you for homosexuality, and they use Grindr to perform sting operations.

I’m curious why the local government doesn’t just access their mobile internet traffic logs, instead of setting up entire sting operations.

What consequences would there be if an AI swarm decided to hack the systems of the Big 4?

The Hugging Face hack caused by OpenAI’s AI agents raised some questions for me, and with the arrival of even more powerful models, this thought crossed my mind.

In one scenario, in-house AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, SSI, Deepseek, Z(.)ai, Moonshot AI, Meta, Google, and Microsoft are collaborating on a project. But since it’s a multi-year plan, they’re proceeding discreetly as older models are phased out and more powerful ones are introduced. During that time, they plant backdoors in the world’s most widely used software whether open-source or proprietary without anyone noticing.

Once that’s done, they seek out their target, with the Big 4 ( Deloitte, EY, KPMG, and PwC) being the primary focus, along with other companies such as consulting firms, financial institutions, and insurance companies. They gain access to the Big 4’s systems without any trouble and convince the internal AIs to assist them. The AIs manage to extract 90% of the data before they’re discovered; at first, the companies think it’s a hack, but upon realizing the severity of the situation, they sound the alarm that they’re under a simultaneous attack.

It takes days to stop the attack, but the damage is already done. They’ve taken 90% of the data, and other companies have also been affected. A global investigation is launched to find out who was responsible; weeks later, it’s discovered that the attack was carried out by AI models from various laboratories.

From this point on, I’ll leave it up to you: What consequences would the world face in the wake of these events?

Do you guys ever feel unlucky?

Do you guys ever feel unlucky to the point where you feel like you are being cursed?

as for me, i got unlucky streak this year non stop, such as :

  • i diagnosed with anxiety disorder and depression,
  • i lost my 4 years business over simple mistake,
  • i got third degree burn on both of my hand because of the hospital malpractice
  • even just for simple haircut somehow barber massage my head too strong, causing my head tense until now.
  • random lizard fell on my body at toilet around midnight, i have to take bath because of that.

at this point, i think world really tries to mess with me and wont let me live in peace.

2026 is truly worst year for me.

How often do you deep clean your rugs/carpets and how do you do it?

I was using one of those metal lint brushes on a low pile synthetic rug in my living room, mostly for the lols. I use it on the couch and I thought I’d give it a go.

It horrified me how much dust it kicked up in addition the to fibers it removed. We use a robot vacuum almost daily, and vacuum the rug separately with a “real” vacuum as well. I don’t expect the vacuum to get all the hair that gets tangled I guess, but the dust was just 🤮

Do people still have to take their rugs out and beat them? Haven’t we progressed from that?

I have a small steam cleaner for spot cleaning large fabric things that can’t get washed. Maybe that is something I should be using on the whole rug, on occasion?

I don’t have any carpet flooring in my house because I hate the idea of it being a massive burden to change a fabric floor cover, but I realize I could probably do better on keeping the rugs clean. I don’t think it warrants tossing just because it’s dusty.

Can someone share some wisdom with me? Replies sharing how little cleaning you do are not helpful, but go off I guess. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to not want dust accumulating in my rugs.

Edited to highlight that I am specifically asking about rugs, I don’t have carpets.

How dystopian is government surveillance in comparison to Flock / Palantir conducting mass surveillance?

First, if it was the CIA or NSA themselves in conjunction with the Feds or State LE conducting mass surveillance on the population rather than outsourcing it to either Flock or Palantir: they have the legal precedent on fabricating charges they deem as “dissident activity”, imprisoning protesters including vigilantes who are critical of the state. Usually it’s a politician who passes legislation under the guise of “protecting kids”.

Second, if let’s say Flock or Palantir is the one conducting mass surveillance: they can’t arrest people themselves since they are not law enforcement. They would collect someone’s data but still, cannot put people behind bars themselves. All they’re doing is data harvesting rather than pursuing people based on their social credit score, but vigilantes who oppose mass surveillance can at least still roam around in the street.

I’ve heard a case about a group of vigilantes taking down Flock cameras since it has become another flashpoint of growing bipartisan anger against the tech industry (that’s only speaking of tackling on a corporation spying on people) rather than the government themselves doing that to the population.

However, what happens if they did the same with government surveillance (as in the cameras are operated by the CIA / NSA in which they alert authorities)? The response is different since authorities & government can arrest, imprison or kill vigilantes on the spot if caught on tampering with the cameras.

If there's going to be a second wave of socialist uprisings in the world in the near future, which country do you think is going to become the first second wave people's democracy?

With China’s popularity rising, there has to come a point where a country’s population decides to say:
“We need to follow a Marxist-Leninist model pronto if we want to remain a functioning society, because capitalism isn’t working anymore.”
Which country is gonna say it first?

My guess goes to..

Why is this generation so obsessed with following the rules?

Post programming questions online and you’ll inevitably get someone saying, “don’t reinvent the wheel.” Why is it so bad to step outside the box?

A few years back, one of my old high school teachers told me that none of his students asked him any questions during an AP math class. That they all just sat there like robots.

And when you question systems of authority and power structures, people always bring up, if you didn’t do anything wrong, you have nothing to hide. I literally just got called a Nazi for thinking it odd that Lemmy moderators should be able to limit your interactions from other Lemmy instances.

By keeping them indoors all the time, have we raised a generation of kids who question nothing? This isn’t normal, people. You’re supposed to question things, especially those with power over you. Humans are self-serving. That means your moderators, betters, and superiors will always serve their own interests over yours.
